Should we choose an Agricultural Civ? Full PM-box? Change here!

From the UN:

quote:
Congraulations to all the teams on meeting the first deadline. Together, you chose the following map settings:

* Map Size: Standard (100x100)
* Landmass: Continents
* Ocean Percentage: 70%
* World Age: 4 Billion Years
* Climate: Normal
* Temperature: Temperate
* Barbarians: Restless

It is now time to progress to the next step of pre-game planning. First, there are still two pre-game polls that do not have enough responses to be conclusive, ocean percentage and difficulty level. You can get to those threads through the links in the previous sentence. Second, all teams should review the rule changes proposed in this thread. If a team wishes to tweak the wording of a certain proposal, they should do that in the next few days and post their alternate version in the same thread. Third, now that most map settings are known, it is time to select civilizations. Team captains should submit a list of their top 3 civilizations to me and Elucidus via PM. CIVILIZATION LISTS SHOULD NOT BE POSTED IN A PUBLIC FORUM!

The deadline to complete the first two tasks is Friday, June 17, 2005. The deadline to submit your civilization choices is Sunday, June 19, 2005. Please do your best to get everything submitted by that date. A copy of this message will be PMed to all team captains. Remember, feedback is always welcome, let us know what you think of how pregame planning is going.

Your administrator,
Micaelis Rex

Since there was vocal support for this in discussion, and it would make the civ debate a lot rulier if we were choosing among the 7 Ag civs, I figured I should start this poll.

Why not. The Celts, Iroquois, and Sumerians would be my picks.

I know my first two choices are probably agricultural. But my third choice may not be.

I therefore vote Pick from them all.

Do 3-2-1 voting thread, where everyone picks their top three civ. (Limited to only those civs already nominated in the civ choice thread if you wish). Manually add them up, and we get our teams top three choices.

Re: voting methods, thing is, a lot of unpopular votes go by the wayside then. I'd rather have two or three rounds of voting to narrow down the choices, and sweep any votes from defeated options wherever their owners prefer.

I chose pick from them all.

Ag can be a powerful trait, but it is not necessarily the end-all be-all, so we should keep our options open. My list would probably only have one or two Ag civs, probably not three...

I think we should pick from them all. There are some non-Ag civs that are pretty decent, IMO.

Aren't they rushing this along?

Six days to pick the civ?

Then what? Two weeks to sit around and look at each other?

Given inactive forums due to no game going on, I would like a little more time after map settings are final for people to be able to come back and realise the important stuff has started.

Does that make sense? Can we ask them to slow down a bit?

Well, we don't know if more than one team will pick a certain Civs or not; it's possible that two teams could end up submitting the same top 3 choices. If that happens, teams will need time to decide who gets what Civ and what mechanism will decide that.

Besides, earlier, when we went through the discussion on Civ choices we went ahead with the notion that we'd be using the same setting as the last game. It wasn't untiljust a little while ago we became aware we'd vote on the setting once again.

I think a week is enough time for teams to decide. If people are not active enought to get theri input in within a weeks time, then too bad for them. Not being mean, just reasonable I think.

That said, I can't see why a June 22 deadline would be too awful either.

M Rex did say:

So, I would guess he would be open to extending the deadline if we felt it was needed and/or warranted.

While I would likely put an Ag civ on the top of my list I chose to pick from all the civs to allow for more variety.

I ultimately voted yes. I like some non-Ag civs, but not as much as the Ag ones that share similiar traits. Agricultural is just such a powerful trait I have hold it above others.

I was one of those who championed Greece for the first round because of it's "don't bother us because of our defense" abillity to get us into the second round, but it was fairly obvious we fell behind those who chose Ag civs. Part of that can be attributed to starting location, but another part was the superiority of agriculture as a trait.

I'd bet that several of the others will choose ag civs. If we don't then it's entirely possible we'd fall behind again. Population is power in this game and ag civs give us the best chance of growth.
