In the following morning, when everyone had already fallen asleep after the freaking out caused by the strange rustling heard outside, the very discoverer of the noise, Nikolai, was found dead smack dab in the middle of city square with a slashed throat.

So, it was time to vote, as was the tradition when crap like this happened. (Which, as it happens, is why the population of the village is only 22 - well, 21 now.)
