I bought the Xplosiv edition of the game, but it's not working properly on my computers. I have two separate problems.
On the desktop it installs fine, but when I go to actually begin a new game, or load an already-existing game, it crashes. It loads up the frames of the graphic interface (such as the control panel to the bottom right), though no buttons and no terrain. Then it exits to windows and informs me that it encountered a critical error and had to stop running.
My machine is a Pentium 2.8GHz, running an FX5600 graphics card. I have half a gig of RAM. I'm running Windows XP, service pack 2. (The back of the box says it's not compatible with XP, but the installer says it is... odd.)
Meanwhile, the game runs on my laptop, which is also running service pack 2 (slower processor, better graphics card, same RAM). However, the laptop has a similar bug that occurs rarely: here, it seems that save games eventually become corrupt. Some bug occurs that carries over to all later savegames. If I load any of them, the same crash occurs - the same as the desktop, but happening ONLY when loading these savegames. It gets very frustrating - if I don't notice it quickly, I can lose hours of gameplay, because all the saves are corrupt.
I have tried installing the official patch, I have installed the Apolyton update (with and without the official patch pre-installed). I have even found and installed a no-cd patch, in case it was a problem with the CD spinning up (it was not). I'm at my wit's end with this - it's making the game unplayable for me, and I really enjoy this game.
Has anyone else had similar problems, or heard of the symptoms?
