Speaking of which: Overpopulation isn't that much of a problem in the United States, as compared to say, Africa or India. Our birthrate is what again, 2.3 per family? That's not that high. It's where many people are breeding a lot in one location when it's a problem, methinks.

The problem isn't a lot of people being born. The problem is a lot of people moving. Individual economies can easily handle baby booms, but they can't handle huge numbers of people moving in (which is often far greater than any baby boom.)

My dad was born in 1905 and he was no.8 out of 16. My Grandmother was the Mother of all of them. My Grandfather was dad to 15 of them. My Grandmother was raped by her brother-in-law when she was around 16 or 17. This was her first child.
In the mid west at the turn of the century (1900s) big family was the norm.

You can get chicken quarters - thighs and legs - for $.29 to $.39 per pound. Besides that.

Onions - $10 to $15 for 50 lbs.
Lentils - $.50/lb at Walmart
Rice - I've not priced it in years, as I now eat brown rice (glycemic loading issues), but I think you can get 50 lbs. for under $25.
Carrrots - watch your sales, you can periodically get them 3lb/$1
Apples in season - $.50/lb
Bannanas - $.33 down to $.19 per pound

Plus for vegetables - you can always plant zucchini.

I'm certain that the girls' clothes are homemade - they're all made from the same cloth pattern. Most of the boy's jackets are the same too. If she's skilled enough she might have made them also. Perhaps most of the family's clothes are homemade.
