The Battle for the Ashes: who will win? Put an end to popups!

Ha ha - made you look

Yes its a cricket thread - Australia is in England for the most famous clash on the cricket calendar. Can England win back the Ashes at last?

5 tests, a one day series, heaven. The whole cricket world watches this one.

I thought we should have a thread on it.

Post away cricket lovers.

Lose 30 kilos (of popups)

I don't even know the rules to cricket, but it seems obvious to me that Australia will retain the Ashes.

I don't know. After all, the English side went 179/8 with Australia 79 and all out recently.

Nope, not a clue, but I do know what a safety is in American football and what a 3-2-2 count means in American baseball...

But that was Twenty20. A far shorter game than the regular cricket match.

It's fine to say 3-2-2. You are just including the outs in the count. (though really no one does it)

I'll bet the bookies are hoping Australia's 4 tour losses on the trot will lead to more money for England at shorter odds.

Rumour has it the Bangladesh team was chaired off the ground by bookmakers after the match

I think Australia has done this deliberetly in an attempt to regain interest in cricket. They were winning every match and were threatened with the loss of live coverage on tv. Now that they are actually losing a bit, there is a great deal of interest in the side.

Going by form over the past couple of years, it should go to England- but I wouldn't rule out an upset if Warne and McGrath start producing the goods again.

It should be good. This is the strongest England side since the 80's (OK- that's not saying much....).

Help yourself to an AD-FREE life

i read in the paper that only 14 people in this country had a bet on bangladesh to win, at 33-1 as well. wonder what odds you'd get on an england/bangladesh final in the series

in the one day games we've looked good, although we were a bit lucky yesterday, austrailia have looked mostly poor, and losing to a second division side isn't really good enough. in the tests i'd say we're better than this australian side and we're on home soil, but that's no guarantee.

I don't think it's an actual sport. It's just an excuse to insert random, sometimes meaningless words into sentences to confuse non-Brits, or those whose greatest achievement was being colonized by the Brits.

Two teams of eleven players. They each take turns to have one "Innings" in which one team bowls/fields, while the other bats.

There are two batters on the field, taking position at the opposing wickets. One is bowled at. If he gets the chance, he can run so that the two batsmens change ends. If they make it, without the ball hitting the wicket before they arrive, they score a "run". They can keep running and score more "runs" if they get the chance.

There are other rules, but those are the basics.

You'd have to be stupid to not be able to understand cricket. Mostly it comes from descriptions such as

"One side goes out to bat, while the other goes out to field. The side that goes out to bat sends 2 players out to bat, whereby they stay out until they get out, when they then go in, to be replaced by another batsman who goes out until he gets out. Once they all get out, they go in, along with the other team who goes in, having been sent in to bat. They then send two players out to bat until they get out, whereby they than go in....." etc...

That would confuse anybody. A simpler version is...

"One side bats in order to score as many runs as possible, while the other attempts to stop them by getting all of their batsment out. They do so by bowling to the batsmen and trying to hit their stumps or get them caught off their bat. Meanwhile, the batsmen try to hit the ball to score runs, by getting to the other end before the bowling side can hit the stumps with the ball".

There are many rules about batting and bowling, and other ways to get them out and score runs, but until you understand the first part, there's no point explaining the rest!

Suffering from ads?

nah I think cricket is a game you need to grow up with to really appreciate.

For example there is always an immense amount going on, almost too much to process at any given time, and this is why people can watch or listen to the game for hours on end totally engrossed and fascinated by it, but it seems to the uninitiated that nothing is happening.

You mean something is actually happening?!!!

The funny thing is that Yanks think its slow, yet they watch Baseball and American Football which is more standing around talking than actually playing anything. They give us a run for our money when it comes to slow sports

Go the Aussies. I see they put the Poms in place yesterday. The best part of it was that the pommie batsmen were shitscared of Brett Lee
