The name of Star Wars, episode 4 - Im now convinced Get a bigger avatar today!

DVD of The Phantom Menace (SW:Episode 1) has a documentary of how they made TPM. They filmed the Tatoine scenes in Tunisia, and had a bad storm that delayed filming. Thus, George Lucas: Its no big deal, we'll catch up, the same thing happened when we shot Star Wars.

So there you have it.

Full PM-box? Change here!

We all knew that already. Except for Imran. But he has no authority to speak on anything Star Wars.

The more pressing question is why you were watching the Phantom Menace?

Back before he realized that even the creator refers to the first movie by its original name, LOTM was Imrans biggest supporter in the other thread.

At first I thought Imran might be right, but then I bowed before JohnT's almighty superiority.

Suffering from ads?

In the commentary track on the DVD version of Episode 4, Lucas says that he wanted to put the episode number and title at the beginning of the opening crawl from the get go. The studio 86'd the idea however, as they thought it would confuse audiences. Lucas only got his way after the movie became a huge success.

On a side note, I was talking with my girlfriend the other day and mentioned some incident in "Star Wars", meaning Episode 4. She asked me which movie I meant. Imran's hypothetical situation come to life...

Support Apolyton, buy GURPS/ Alpha Centauri

The 1st three prequels are pure suckage, and not worthy of the franchise.

I prefer Lord of the Rings, anyway...

The novels of which Lucas heartily ripped off, along with The Hidden Fortress.

Yeah, but "he's a credit to your race" was actually pretty funny, esp. given the visual. And its not like the original trilogy was filled with sparkling dialogue.

I mean Lucas basically tells the story with images, NOT with words. Having heard so long how bad the acting, dialogue etc were in this, I wasnt expecting much, and it wasnt a bad film. He should have cut down the pod race though.

Ya know what the prob is? If you refer to the movies OTHER than the first one by name - IE "I just rented the DVD of The Phantom Menace, and ....." then referring to Episode 4 as Star Wars is not at all confusing. Now obviously Lucas, when he says Star Wars, in unambigous, since he thinks of each film by name. If youre talking to people who dont really follow it, you say "the phantom menace" and they think youre talking about that musical by Andrew Lloyd Weber. Even if you talk to people who know what you mean, it sounds embarrasingly geeky. Esp for episodes 1 and 2. So youre inclined to say "the first star wars movies, oops, I mean the fourth one, well episode 1, you know what I mean" Once you go that way, calling "Star Wars" Episode 4 is inevitable. Lucas will never need to do so, since hes the ultimate Star Wars geek on the planet himself.

Elsewhere in the documentary, Lucas is showing Steven Spielberg a model of the Droid soldiers. Lucas is going on and on about this big battle, and there will be thousands of Gung-gung, and all, and Spielberg, is like uh huh, yeah that will be cool, George - and you can almost see the thought balloon "this guy is crazy". I mean Spielberg may be a wealthy, pretentious, Hollywood director, producer, studio boss, etc - but he's still at bottom, like a normal person, whos made films of many different styles on different themes, has gotten good performances out of a lot of good actors, etc. Whereas Lucas has devoted his life to the Star Wars series, to building the planets premier special effects studio, and to basically being one of the head geeks of our time. I mean heres a genius who can do wonders integrating animation, live action, special effects, etc - and yet he seems to think Natalie Portman, Ewan McGregor, etc did fine acting jobs in TPM.

Lose 30 kilos (of popups)

I am still curious about the rumors that Tom Stoppard helped write a chunk of RotJ, since if he did I have lost some respect for that playwright.
