quote: Did Tom Cruise try to recruit Scarlett Johansson to Scientology?
The “Lost in Translation” star was expected to co-star with Cruise in “Mission: Impossible III” but was dropped because of “scheduling conflicts.” But it seems that there may have been other conflicts as well. Cruise invited Johansson to a Scientology center where he showed her literature about joining his controversial church, according to a report. “After two hours of proselytizing,” according to RadarMagazine.com, “Cruise opened a door to reveal a second room full of upper-level Scientologists who had been waiting to dine with the pair, at which point the cool-headed ingénue politely excused herself.”
The Scoop called Johansson’s mother/manager for comment and she declined, referring us to Johansson’s publicist, who didn’t return calls or emails. Cruise’s rep didn’t respond to requests for comment, but Rick Ross of CultNews.com told the Scoop: “Is this Tom Cruise’s version of a first date? It’s becoming increasingly difficult to make distinctions between his personal, professional and religious life. Tom Cruise and Scientology seem intent on recruiting a hot young star. Apparently, Scarlett Johansson flunked her test, but Katie Holmes passed.” |

The religion has levels?! |
Yah, know, i went up to my rabbi, and told him that what with POTMs bat mitzvah this year, id been attending more than usual, and should be getting at least a couple of XP's for each time, plus a whole bunch for the Bat Mitzvah, etc and that i thought it was about time to level up, and that i wanted to add character points to wisdom and agility, and ya know, he just went away shakin' his head.

Some of the arguments here seem to be disingenuous.
Dietary Restrictions: The point of kosher or halal is or was the avoidance of cruelty to animals, and rudimentary concepts of hygienic living. Plenty of Jews live kosher their whole lives with no health problems AFAIK. Feeding people mush while they're at seminars to lower their mental acuity seems different somehow. It's not technically a dietary restriction, as it's not permanent; they just deliberately sabotage the metabolism of potential suc-er, believers.
Going further into the religion: When you become a Catholic, Muslim, Jew, Hindu, Buddhist, Confucian, or just about anything else, you join and that's it. Outside of the clergy, there's just one level. If you want to "go further," all there is to it is studying scripture, or meditating, or something along those lines. While, for example, priests are paid for performing weddings, the fees are usually more modest than a hundred grand, which is what it costs to get up to some OT level in the CoS. Nor are people constantly pressured to obtain a service that costs money in normal churches. Normal churches, except for the Mormons who have mandatory tithing, rely on voluntary contributions. Let's keep some perspective here. Scientology is indistinguishable from any given snake-oil scam except insofar as it is tax-exempt.

{cough}bat mitzvah - food (we're just talking the kiddush, havent even had the party yet) tallis for POTM, new clothes, donation to charity, tikkun (a book she studied from), invitations, programs, flowers, skull caps in POTM's favorite spring colors. dinner for out of town relatives, yadda, yadda {cough}
not that i have much sympathy for the CoS, especially the BS about psychiatry, which may well have cost more than a few lives.

if you read the links provided than you will see that they are a lot worse then just causing people to not seek the help that they need (There are small christian groups that do that also...)
they are a bonified evil organization, intent on world domination
anyone else spend hours reading about them?
I didn't know that they did near the ammount of stuff that they did, nor LRH being part of the occult
I mean, they aren't just a cult (like Koresh's group, and Heaven's Gate), they also try to subvert the government...
I hope they are on their way out

(order of evilness, from least evil to most evil..
1 keeps their practitioners from things that could save them or better their lives
2 takes their practitioners out of the rest of society, brainwashes them
3 attempts to take over governments and legal institutes to possibly control others...)

I want to know how he published a relatively decent pulp book (Battlefield Earth) after/during all the insanity
I had always assumed it was written before he went off the deep end...

I wonder what would happen if a celebrity Scientologist ratted them out? Could they take on Tom Cruise?

Hey, LotM, you should become a Catholic. They don't have to shell out anything for baptism or confirmation. |
well I wont get into the issue of presents And to be fair, we've been fed at other family's bar bat Mitzvan luncheons at this shul for the past 12 years, so its about time we "put something back". The family dinner was costly, but my brother and cousin have done the same to, so again, it all balances out. and it was chance for a long lost cousin, who i had only met on two occasions, to meet my brother for the first time.
POTM chanted torah (from a traditional hand written scroll, which means no vowels, and no Cantillation notes far harder than just reading or chanting in Hebrew) and had the longest section of her class (cause of the particularly Saturday she got). We were all very proud.
I thought she wouldnt want to do any more, but she did some extra torah sections, and two months later she also chanted a smaller section at her friends bar mitzvah. Shes gotten really good at it. We were
Oh, at the dinner - CoS was not discussed at all. given that there were TWO Psych Social Workers at the table, they would NOT have been popular
