Walking to work the other day I was provided with enough reason to carry a weapon with me. A man was walking the opposite way along the sidewalk and was a little ways away. He squared up with me and his body language went from casual to hostile. IIRC, max. for a misdemeanor is one year in county jail.
Felony in more than a year in state prison.

I don't know what makes a misdemeanor "petty" but it sounds like you'd be serving a lot less time. If you have a spotless record, they'll probably yell at you, give you probation and let you go.

But remember Jim Carey's advice to his client in Liar Liar: "Stop breaking the law, @hole!"

Speaking generally...

Yup misdemeanor is typically 365 or less in jail. Most probably won't come with probation, rather community service, if anything, because with probation comes potential back up time in jail. bad bad bad. If its your first arrest or whatever jurisdiction specific blah blah, you can probably get a diversion from prosecution for a nominal fee.

Most traffic offenses are infractions, anyway
