Yeah, because most US banks are very very small operations. The "big 5" have no problem taking them over.

Yes, of course.
But the majority of American banks are small time operations and usually don't consist of much more than one branch. There is nothing in the US that compares to the scale and availibility of the Big Five.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining. I love that I can go anywhere in Canada and find a Guichet Scotia.
Hell, I was in Mexico last year thinking "I need some cash..." only to turn around and find a Scotiabank ABM right in front of me. You can't beat that.
