A truely gfreat song. Gordon is the man

There was a time in this fair land when the railroad did not run
When the wild majestic mountains stood alone against the sun
Long before the white man and long before the wheel
When the green dark forest was too silent to be real
But time has no beginnings and hist’ry has no bounds
As to this verdant country they came from all around
They sailed upon her waterways and they walked the forests tall
And they built the mines the mills and the factories for the good of us all

And when the young man’s fancy was turnin’ to the spring
The railroad men grew restless for to hear the hammers ring
Their minds were overflowing with the visions of their day
And many a fortune lost and won and many a debt to pay

For they looked in the future and what did they see
They saw an iron road runnin’ from sea to the sea
Bringin’ the goods to a young growin’ land
All up through the seaports and into their hands

Look away said they across this mighty land
From the eastern shore to the western strand
Bring in the workers and bring up the rails
We gotta lay down the tracks and tear up the trails
Open ’er heart let the life blood flow
Gotta get on our way ’cause we’re movin’ too slow

Bring in the workers and bring up the rails
We’re gonna lay down the tracks and tear up the trails
Open ’er heart let the life blood flow
Gotta get on our way ’cause we’re movin’ too slow
Get on our way ’cause we’re movin’ too slow

Behind the blue rockies the sun is declinin’
The stars, they come stealin’ at the close of the day
Across the wide prairie our loved ones lie sleeping
Beyond the dark oceans in a place far away

We are the navvies who work upon the railway
Swingin’ our hammers in the bright blazin’ sun
Livin’ on stew and drinkin’ bad whiskey
Bendin’ our old backs ’til the long days are done

We are the navvies who work upon the railway
Swingin’ our hammers in the bright blazin’ sun
Layin’ down track and buildin’ the bridges
Bendin’ our old backs ’til the railroad is done

So over the mountains and over the plains
Into the muskeg and into the rain
Up the st. lawrence all the way to gaspe
Swingin’ our hammers and drawin’ our pay
Drivin’ ’em in and tyin’ ’em down
Away to the bunkhouse and into the town
A dollar a day and a place for my head
A drink to the livin’ and a toast to the dead

Oh the song of the future has been sung
All the battles have been won
O’er the mountain tops we stand
All the world at our command
We have opened up the soil
With our teardrops and our toil

For there was a time in this fair land when the railroad did not run
When the wild majestic mountains stood alone against the sun
Long before the white man and long before the wheel
When the green dark forest was too silent to be real
When the green dark forest was too silent to be real
And many are the dead men too silent to be real

And for Asher and NYE

Oh the prairie lights are burnin bright
The chinook wind is a-movin in
Tomorrow night Ill be alberta bound
Though Ive done the best I could
My old luck aint been so good and
Tomorrow night Ill be alberta bound
No one-eyed man could eer forget
The rocky mountain sunset
Its a pleasure just to be alberta bound
I long to see my next of kin
To know what kind of shape theyre in
Tomorrow night Ill be alberta bound
Alberta bound, alberta bound
Its good to be alberta bound
Alberta bound, alberta bound
Its good to be alberta bound

Oh the skyline of toronto
Is somethin youll get onto
But they say youve got to live there for a while
And if you got the money
You can get yourself a honey
A written guarantee ta make you smile
But its snowin in the city
And the streets and brown and gritty
And I know theres pretty girls all over town
But they never seem ta find me
And the one I left behind me
Is the reason that Ill be alberta bound

Alberta bound, alberta bound
Its good to be alberta bound
Alberta bound, alberta bound
Its good to be alberta bound
Its good to be alberta bound

Hey Ben, ever driven from Vancouver to Penticton?

if yesm, you might relate to Jamers K's song:

It's always at sunset the Hope Princeton Road
You come to mind and that lightens my load
The darkness is gathering the clouds overhead
I'm thinking about you and something you said
There's something you said that stands out in my mind
You said I was lonely that made me unkind
You said I should buck up and shoulder the road
Those words made some sense on the Hope Princeton Road
It's always at sunset the Hope Princeton Road
Spirits are high but the ceiling is low
I'm anticipating your bright smiling face
The pleasures awaiting me inside your place
Well inside your place the'll be food and a drink
Something cool maybe a tonic I think
Or maybe some tunes on your new stereo
To counter the hum of the Hope Princeton Road
It's always at sunset the Hope Princeton Road
My heart beat is racing my speed is controlled
I know that you're waiting an hour ahead
But this part is endless you've oft heard it said
You've oft head it said that life is a road
It turns and it straightens, it's fast and it's slow
But all that's no comfort for right now I know
My life is contained on the Hope Princeton Road
It's always at sunset the Hope Princeton Road
You come to mind and that lightens my load
The darkness is gathering the clouds overhead
I'm thinking about you and something you said
There's something you said that stands out in my mind
You said I was lonely that made me unkind
You said I should buck up and shoulder the road
Those words made some sense on the Hope Princeton Road

Okay boys, we may disagree on politics, but;s Stan was a god. And one of themany classic Stan songs:

How still lies the bay, in the light western airs
Which blow from the crimson horizon
Once more we tack home, with a dry empty hold
Saving gas with the breezes so fair
She's a kindly cape islander, old but still sound
But so lost in the long liner's shadow
Make and Break and make do, but the fish are so few
That she won't be replaced should she founder

Now its so hard to not think of before the big war
When the cod went so cheap, but so plenty
Foreign trawlers go by now with long seeking eyes
Taking all where we seldom take any
And the young folk don't stay with the fisherman's ways
Long ago they all moved to the cities
And the ones left behind old and tired and blind
Won't work for a pound, for a penny.

In Make and Break Harbour the boats are so few
Too many are pulled up and rotten.
Most houses stand empty, old nets hung to dry
Are blown away lost and forgotten

Now I can see the big draggers have stirred up the bay
Leaving lobster traps smashed on the bottom
Can they think it don't pay to respect the old ways
That make and break men have not forgotten
For we still keep our time to the turn of the tide
In this boat that I built with my father
Still lifts to the sky, the "one lunger" and I
Still talk like old friends on the water

The symphony in your head
The kind of things I wish that were never said
Cause I had no idea
Break my heart another day.
You lost what you wanted
Did you want it this way?
Cause I had no idea, yeah

Come on, come on, come on,
I thought we were just having fun
Come on, come on, come on,
It's all in your mind, she said
Well, Come on, Come on, come on,
Don't be afraid of it, falling in love
Come on, come on, come on

Broken hear, what's the matter?
You knew it was coming,
boy it didn't change a thing.
Cause I had no idea.
Let it get to you on the way back.
Summertime love was the only thing we could have.
Cause I had no idea.

Come on, come on, come on,
I thought we were just having fun
Come on, come on, come on,
It's all in your mind, she said
Well, Come on, Come on, come on,
Don't be afraid of it, falling in love
Come on, come on, come on

Do what you want if it's on your way back down.
Do what you want if it's on your way back home.

Come on, come on, come on,
I thought we were just having fun
Come on, come on, come on,
Isn't this fun?

Come on, come on, come on,
Don't be afraid of it, falling in love
Come on, come on, come on

Chorus:

Ah, for just one time I would take the Northwest Passage
To find the hand of Franklin reaching for the Beaufort Sea;
Tracing one warm line through a land so wild and savage
And make a Northwest Passage to the sea.

Westward from the Davis Strait 'tis there 'twas said to lie
The sea route to the Orient for which so many died;
Seeking gold and glory, leaving weathered, broken bones
And a long-forgotten lonely cairn of stones.

Three centuries thereafter, I take passage overland
In the footsteps of brave Kelso, where his "sea of flowers" began
Watching cities rise before me, then behind me sink again
This tardiest explorer, driving hard across the plain.

And through the night, behind the wheel, the mileage clicking west
I think upon Mackenzie, David Thompson and the rest
Who cracked the mountain ramparts and did show a path for me
To race the roaring Fraser to the sea.

How then am I so different from the first men through this way?
Like them, I left a settled life, I threw it all away.
To seek a Northwest Passage at the call of many men
To find there but the road back home again.
