Maybe it has something to to with the height where he held the RC.
Maybe in his first trial at 50 yards he held it just in the midst of his body (maybe at 1m height) and the signals for example got somehow blocked enroute to the lock whereas at the second trial he held it higher (1.8m or whatever the height of your friend is) and the signal was able to circumvent the obstacle blocking it.
If he really held the RC at different heights for the experiment, I would insist at a third trial, where he holds the RC at the same height as his head, but with the arms outstretched (so that the RC is at a different distance from his head [maybe 0.5 m])

The brain will act as an amplifier in these cases. Tell you friend to stick it up his ass, then try.

Sounds reasonable. I couldn't think of a good reason why he should stick it though.

When the beam entered your friend's empty skull, it echoed inside it until it was amplified enough to burst out and remote lock all cars within a hundred miles.
