Baudolino is, imo, Eco's worst. If it is going to be your first Eco, put it down and go read The Name of the Rose or Foucault's Pendulum. Both are far superior.

"The Elusive Quest for Growth" by William Easterly: The author tends to write a bit like a egomanical mad scientist, but he's making some interesting points.
"Globalization and its Discontent" by Jospeh Stiglitz: Much better writer and anyone who is interested in economics should read it. Accessible for the layperson.

I agree wholeheartedly on Eco's non-fiction essays. They were weak attempts at humor, for the most part, that may have been lost in translation.
Maybe I was not in the right frame of mind to enjoy Baudolino, but I did not enjoy it on either an intellectual level or on a lighter level. I just did not find it to be particularly good, especially when Foucault's Pendulum and The Name of the Rose were such achievements.
I look forward to reading his new book, The Mysterious Flame of Queen Loana. It was just released in translation here in America.
