No Betty Ford clinic for smokers (or people who aren't rich)

I was thinking of spending three weeks at my parent's place... it's in the middle of the rainforest, the air is fresh and the living is healthy.

Would be good if my mum wasn't a smoker (she quits every month... never works).

I think you have to have several things on hand to satisfy the oral fixation - food, lollipops, toothpicks, life savers & other hard candies. For me, pot worked well too, but then I did (and still do) smoke, so I wasn't starting anything new (and stopping pot is easy for me.) You may be able to resist the oral urge, but it's best to have a few things on hand to satisfy it if your resistance fails.

You may also want to look into lettuce-leaf cigarettes, or other non-tobacco smokeables. This is because the actual sensation of inhaling and exhaling smoke is very satisfying, and it helps to recreate it with a non-addictive substance. You'll not want to substitute one fo the other in the long run, but I found it helps in the short run to break the nicotine addiction.

After you've gotten to a point where you smoke less than 10 cigs/day for a week or so, declare that you'll stop altogether after you finish a pack, and stretch it out so that you smoke that last cig before bed.

Just sharing my experiences. I smoked a pack a day for 12 years, and it took me 3 times to quit. I haven't smoked in 5+ years, and don't desire to. I still smoke pot, but can (and have) quit for months at a time at will (and I prefer pot cookies to smoking anyhow.) I can also indulge in a cigar once every year or two without problems.

Then again, I was able to do cocaine for a summer, and stopped without much difficulty, so perhaps I'm not as susceptible to addictions as others.

Only 45% of smokers are addicted to nicotine. Another 45% have a psychic need to smoke, and 10% can stop without difficulty. I have been a 50 cigs a day smoker, and I stopped easily when I got a strong motivation in january 2004 (infarctus).

Davout - sorry to hear you had a heart attack. With a myocardial infaction - my dad had one at 39 because of a similiar habit plus he was overweight - well, your heart can stop. How bad was it? You are awefully young for one.

Davout, yeah I remember the thread someone made (a friend of yours?) informing us of your condition. Glad you are back posting here

About quitting. A long time ago I didn't have a smoke for three months and I thought I was free forever. But then something happened that made me grab a sigaret( btw, can anyone tell me once and for all how to spell that in proper English?). The funny part is that I don't even remember what that something was But that first one tasted so good, I felt like being stoned and my fingertips began to tingle. So if that first one tastes so good then surely the second one must too, right? Well, it didn't and I was hooked again.

I tried to stop several times after that to no avail Now I just quitted quitting...

That's how I do it. I just smoked one so far today and it's about 2pm here.

It was not so bad, but it degenerated in an aneurism which necessitated urgent surgery, often deadly, which explains my sig. I am not so young (65)

The guy posting on my condition was my son.

About motivation. I was not so much motivated by the fear of death, because I was not convinced that smoking was so dangerous (heart attacks concern ALSO no smokers), than by the desire to alleviate the terrible anxiety felt by the family.

Hehe... I thought I was one of the oldest here You still have 15 years on me but I'm sure I will surpass you one day

Accidentily, the boyfriend of my favourite ex had an aneurism in his brain last December and they were going to check on him today. Not without risk. He is in his sixties too. You know, these kind of stories scare me, being 50 and never had any serious health problems my whole life. Smoking, drinking too much, not eating healthily.

And I thought Ming was our old timer. Aneurism - damn, those kill people. And I was feeling sorrow for myself when my drug interactions caused my heart to decide it was most unhappy and missed a beat. Several, actually until the rigged me up to one of those portable battery chargers and kick started me (didn't scare me at all, being unconscious and all that - my wife, on the other hand...). Fortunately for me it's just a matter of changing my Calcium Channel Blocker - no more generic for me - and dropping the dosage my Beta Blocker. The left my Angiotensin Receptor Blocker, diuretic, and Statin's alone - as I said, I'm on a sh*tload of drugs. They could have tried some of the drugs for arrythmia, but the FAA medical examiner was really unhappy with that solution, so we adjusted the other drugs.

No difference in the spelling from either side of the pond, so don't worry about that Hueij.

I'm having a tough day (stress) but I'm not going to quit quiting. Cigarettes don't help the stress, like the little tape player in my head keeps telling me they do. I'm stressed out regardless of whether or not I smoke. Smoking actually makes it worse.
