You lot don't know much about catfish. The Mekong giants have been suspected for a long time to be capable of reaching sizes like this. The giant catfish of the Amazon are suspected to be even bigger.

Yep... it's called noodling down here, though that term is used in a lot of places (like Oklahoma). It's banned in most states, however.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Noodling

http://espn.go.com/outdoors/general...th/1336494.html

From the ESPN link:

quote:
Several terms describe the practice of hand-grabbing catfish. "Noodling" is almost universal, not surprising when you realize this is derived from the word "noodle," meaning a very stupid person; a fool.

Well, you're wrong. Catfish are known to grow to incredible sizes.

While it's in the realm of legend, many divers working in the Mississippi River have reported seeing catfish the size of Volkswagons.

I'd never go noodling for catfish. Catfish live in the same waters as alligator snapping turtles, and you definately don't want one of those suckers biting your fingers.

This is a species of catfish that we're talking about. Not just one. They are harvested regularlyby the people of the Mekong River. (which is one reason why they're nearing extinction.) Sure, there might be only one original source on this particular catch, but you said you doubted in general that catfish can grow to that size, when there's an entire species like it.

Alligator snapping turtles are actually not as aggressive as the common snapping turtle. Of course, they are larger, and either way I don't plan on sticking my hands into any places they might be hiding in.

Even so, I wouldn't call catfish dangerous. Sloww is just a woman...
