How do you feel about robots in our society in near future? (Time out:0 days after 02-07-2005, 17:24)
I absolutely cant wait to stop working and worrying. Let the lazy days begin!
Its interesting, I dont think they will ever replace humans in work though.
We shouldnt open the pandoras box. One day they will outsmart us and then we are all doomed.
Can we make them run with banannas?

Robots, androids, cyborgs - Robotics

Truely fascinating area. Will they be the answer to the labour shortages the developed countries are facing in the next decades? Will they take the role of slave labour in our societies where robots do all the dirty and physical work and we only superwise them? Are we soon going to be able to merge human brains with steel torso?

Maybe we are not quite there yet but with this speed of developement, we are surely on the beginning of a new era. The Japanese in particular seem to have focused heavily on developing the first real Android and all kinds of cool service robots such as robocops, robotic securityguards/firefighters, tourist guides, football players etc.

What do you think about all this? Are you anxiously waiting or afraid of what the future brings? Discuss. Perhaps you know some cool websites or news you'd like to share? Anyone else interested about these machines?

The Japanese are a funny bunch, bless their hearts.

They’re hosting the 2005 World Exposition (through Sept. 25) not far from the town renamed for its biggest employer, Toyota, which has a magnificent show at the Expo featuring musician-robots and cars out of Star Wars. They offer a special robot exhibition hall offering a glimpse of a robot-enhanced life in the year 2020. They even suggest that Africa’s problems of famine and overpopulation can be solved by putting a robot in every hut.

Just don’t try to get a straight answer as to when, where and for how much you might pick up one of these babies.

“These were only done for the show. We don’t know when we will start to sell them, but we are considering starting with robots that would help care for senior citizens,” explained Junnosuke Kambe, a spokesman at the Expo’s Toyota Group Pavilion.

Even if you have high-speed internet, download the video (instead of simply playing it). It takes a long time to buffer 66MB.

With improvements (substantial, but I've never really been that desperate, either), I suspect this will become the first sexdroid. Remember how porn has helped drive the WWW and then the high-speed internet. Hell, I've known women who mostly twitch when they are on the bottom, so the most basic model may be under a decade off. Now one that can do multiple positions will be alot harder, so to speak.

And you just THINK birth rates have tanked in the industrial world.

IMHO one of the biggest obstacles to building an android robot is the lack of a decent lightweight battery or power supply.

The big question is though, if we make them smarter than us will they try to eliminate us?

The idea of making robots to care for the elderly has been an idea of mine for years. You'd be amazed at the number of neglected elderly.

Dr. Stranglove - a sexdroid can have a surreptitious cord. I still maintain that will be one of the first practical applications of humanoid robots - versus industrial units.

Japan sure has a lot of elderly too. But I think an android even with a limited elderly help skillset is an extremely difficult product to integrate and offer it at a halfway reasonable price. That android that shawn links to is rather primitive.

We're taking baby steps with regard to robots. Just look at the Roomba, etc. It doesn't even do well with s'hag carpets.

Edit: Damn. S'hag is now censored?

I'm no longer worried about robots taking over the world. Thing is, by the time we develop AI sufficient enough to try and take over the world, we'd also develop a mind-machine interface that would enable us to shapeshift to robots ourselves.

Very good point. Maybe 100% robots relationship to Cyborgs will be like privates and officers, in army terms. I'm confident that this will be onbe of the key things why we will maintain overall controll.

Threadjack:

NIN - The Becoming

I beat my machine it's a part of me it's inside of me
I'm stuck in this dream it's changing me I am becoming
the me that you know had some second thoughts
he's covered with scabs and he is broken and sore
the me that you know doesn't come around much
that part of me isn't here anymore
all pain disappears it's the nature of my circuitry
drowns out all I hear there's no escape from this my new consciousness
that me that you know used to have feelings
but the blood has stopped pumping and he's left to decay
the me that you know is now made up of wires
and even when I'm right with you I'm so far away
I can try to get away but I’ve strapped myself in
I can try to scratch away the sound in my ears
I can see it killing away all my bad parts
I don't want to listen but it's all too clear

hiding backwards inside of me I feel so unafraid
Annie, hold a little tighter I might just slip away

it won't give up it wants me dead
goddamn this noise inside my head

Put an end to popups!

The problem with the sexbot would be storage. You cannot hide it from your parents, wife, or friends like you can a dildo or porn. And something tells me it would not exactly be socially acceptable to keep a sexbot in your closet, either.

Then again, it opens up a whole new area of human sexuality for pornographers to exploit. A couple that thought about having a threesome but could not quite overcome jealousy issues? Menage a troit with a robot! And look forward to spam with XXX HOT BLONDE WITH HOTTER ROBOT DICK XXX

Wow. The future scares me.

Why be so forceful? I am sure AIs will blend into our universe perfectly. If you can be a human male on one day, an intelligent dinosaur on another, and a spaceship on the third, the source of the creation of your entity becomes meaningless over time. It's also oh-so-very marxist, if you really pay attention.

If might not be socially acceptable to keep your sexdroid in your closet (lending a whole new meaning in the future about being in the closet ) but unless you are married - who cares? I never went through my girlfriends closets - and I'm scared to look in my wife's . I hadn't even thought about it, but a male sexdroid (for women who like to be on top) might even be easier.

Don't get too excited by the prospect of lazy days ahead- most likely the upper classes will decide to let the lower fend for themselves w/o any chance of a job prospect. At some point wiping out the lower classes (with soldier bots, they dont care) to end civil strife and open up new playgrounds to the rich will be put on the table.
