Chinese Emperor - a thought Support Apolyton

Why is it that the screenshots identify one of China's leaders as Qin Shi Huang, rather than as Qin Shi Huang Di I wonder?

The meaning of his name can be thus broken down:

Qin - his feudal state
Shi - first, beginning
Huang - yellow or Shang - heavenly
Di - God-Emperor

This was the reigning title taken by Zheng, the Wang (king) of the State of Qin when he began a new dynasty after vanquishing the Zhou in the 3rd Century BC.

Why would CivIV truncate his throne name-title?

Pardon me if this has already been resolved, but I haven't seen that anyone else has noticed this. Maybe I'm just a history nerd.

Yeah. He looks more like some effete Ming Dynasty catamite, rather than the victorious warlord of history. Anybody see the movie Hero ?

Got spare money?

On another note, here's a brief summary on Ashoka, the 2nd leader of India.

"Asoka (alternate spelling) , the 3rd century BC ruler of the Mauryan dynasty who waged some of the bloodiest wars in Indian history. He was later overcome by remorse for the death and destruction he had unleashed and went on to become a religious visionary, spreading the word of Buddha."

So what attributes would he have?

Come to think of it, what attrbiutes do Qin and Mao have?

Not known at this stage, AFAIK.

If I need to do a gamble, Asoka would be religious and militaristic.

And with this Qin character, if he former his empire on the ruins of a former dynasty, militaristic is a must as well then.

Religious and Militaristic should work for Ashoka, especially since Gandhi is a pacifist and they don't want iNdia to be a pushover in EVERY game you play.

Qin should be a cutural militarist and Mao should be an oppressive tyrannical expansionist.

Come to think of it, perhaps that determines which civs get two leaders -- whether or not the stereotypical cutural personality varies greatly or not.

I mean, look at the civs that we know have two leaders: America, China, India, Mongolia, France, England.

Each one has had a major role in world history, and each has varied personality-wise. So stick in Russia and Egypt and the list is complete!

Suffering from ads?

Hi all--my first post. Have been lurking here for a little bit--usually I didn't have anything to contribute, so I haven't registered. I figured I can actually help here, so finally got myself a screenname :-).

There are two different Chinese characters pronounced Huang--one of them, as you said, means yellow, but the other character means king, and it's the other character that they refer to when they say Qin Shi Huang. In modern Chinese many terms, like king, uses two different characters that mean the same thing repeatedly. For example, nowadays Huang Di means King, even though in the past either Huang or Di by itself means.

To make a long story short, Qin Shi Huang is actually the appropriate name for the historical person, whereas Qin Shi Huang Di would actually be redundant.

Hope this helps :-).
