Got spare money?

Get the 1.08 patch. Don't worry too much about the beta's at first.

Go through the tutorials at the start. They do a pretty good job of showing you the basics even though you'll probably be out of your depth when you get into the a real game.

Play as a moderate or powerful nation in your first GC.
Spain, England, Austria, The OE ...
Build tax collectors in most of your provinces right away. Without them your income will be a third of its potential.
Economy is generally the most important early on. Try and concentrate on trade/infrastructure research and don't be too tempted to mint to much coin unless you really really need it (your treasury slider should be close to zero) - inflation is a killer if you let it get out of control.

Other tips will probably be dependent upon which nation you're playing and whether or not you're involved in any major wars.

Oh, and one final thing? Always listen to Vel.

I picked Spain, the Age of Exploration. It says I'm losing ~30 gold/month. Is this recouped in yearly income, or do I have to move my treasury slider up so I don't go bankrupt?

Lose 30 kilos (of popups)

If you're losing that much right at the start then you probably want to check your military maintainance slider (set it at the lowest possible, 50%, unless you're at war with somebody and expecting to fight fairly soon) and the total strength of your army/navy.
If you're above your support limits then you'll be paying excess maintainance through the teeth. It may be better to downsize (disband) a few units to reduce your costs.

[Edit: You will recoup some of that in your yearly tax income but probably not the 360D worth that you'll lose over the course of the year).

I hasten to add, Kuciwalker, that the great one can sometimes be wrong. Such as during a co-op game where people (ie: me) are frantically screaming at him not to attack somebody much tougher but then he goes off and does it anyway. Hypothetically speaking of course.

It doesn't occur very often but it can happen ...

I'd recommend starting in the 1492 scenario; makes for a smoother game, IMO.

Austria is easy. Once you get Hungary and Bohemia by event; in the AGCEEP mod you also get Magyar and Czech culture (do you get these cultures in Vanilla EU2 as Austria?) you are unstoppable. Austria is known as the Great White Blob for a reason.

One you get some experience, download the AGCEEP Mod at the Paradox Website, it has tons of new events (some made by people from 'Poly, I know Che did a lot of work on the Ottomans) and other improvements.

If you like colonizing, try Spain or England (it is possible to win the 100 years war, and get France and French culture, but it is not a good thing for newbies to try). If you like conquest, try Austria (Russia and Poland are for more experienced players)

Yes, Austria is fairly easy. It's particularly good for practising the diplomatic options. The last game I played was as Austria and I managed something like 14 diplo-vassalisations and 15 diplo-annexes - probably as many as in all the other games I have played put together.

I believe unless you are playing the beta, there is no "sure fire way" to get any casus belli's. You can always use the option "claim their throne" which in the beta is actually is useful now as the stab hits aren't as big.

The best place to start for a newcomer is France in the 1492 scenario

You can't. So grab the territory you want quickly and make peace yourself and leave your allies to their war.

If you are playing Spain you have a CB against most of the non-europeans anyway. If you want a CB against a european country go to the diplomatic options -> relations and issue a warning. If they go to war with anyone whilst the warning is in force, you have a CB. There is no guaranteed way to get a CB but this, I find, is the most cost effective.

At the end of the game when you have maxed out the techs and can only put money into stability or treasury and have the biggest army and navy - who cares about CB's, just go to war.

My suggestion: Make a loan. Yeah, it's tough to get started. My sense of it is that the AI automatically rejects your offer the first X times you try, but eventually, they'll accept, and once they do, you can begin increasing the size of the loan. (I start with 1d at 1% for 12 months).

I'd not recommend going over a 100d loan unless you're swimming in cash though.

Best case scenario: They pay the principle amount back when it's due, and in the meantime, you made a bit of extra pocket money.

Worst case scenario: They renig on the principle portion, and you gain a 12 month CB.

Another easy way to get a CB is to join whatever alliance they're in (this assumes that they're not the alliance leader, since you've got to be on at least passingly good terms with the leader to gain entry).

Simply join the alliance of the member country you wish to fight, and promptly declare war against anyone you have a CB against.

Call your allies.

The nation that hates you will, of course, fail to support your war, and you can INSTANTLY DoW them too!

Obviously, the danger here is to watch out that you don't bite off more than you can chew. If you're worried about that, then make your initial declaration against someone with scant chance of actually reaching you (white peace in 36 months).

Good point here: If you've held back a diplomat specifically for this purpose, then you can DoW your true enemy on the same day he breaks with the alliance. At that point, he's all alone.... (tho he may get an ally by forming his own alliance, but that's a risk you'll just have to live with)

Don't. in the 1500's an event will pop up letting you annex them. Why take them now when you can wait and let then colonize Brazil and parts of Africa for you?

You will need to take the Azores as well as the mainland provinces for 100% victory and they have a better navy than you. Also the AI "knows" when you are trying to land troops and will interfere by attacking your ships.

Anyway, as Odin says, you get them as vassals by event later and can annex them.

Don't eliminate Portugal too early otherwise you won't get the Treaty of Tordesillas which helps you keep other catholic countries out of the Caribbean and South America.

Couldn't I just sit on the mainland provinces and wait for them to go bankrupt, or vassalize them?

For some reason, most of the time I can't send missionaries anywhere - I have them, and I've clicked the missionary button, and I click the province, but it doesn't actually select the province (when I move the cursor off the province, it leaves that province's screen), and the send button never appears. I have been able to send them to two provinces in the Americas, but that's it.

Most of Spain's provinces are devoutly Catholic, and they'll not switch to some other religion over time (in fact, there are events that switch most, if not all of your moorish provinces TO Catholicism, without intervention on your part). Odds are good that the reason you can't send Missionaries is that the religion of the province you are attempting to send to is the same as your state religion, and thus, the provinces are not in need of conversion.

Tired of ads?

Then it ought to be a money problem. Compare the cost it displays to your treasury. Another possible reason can be that there´s any construction going on in the province (bailiff promotion, fortification buildup), as conversion and construction rule each other out.
