WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The
Philadelphia Eagleshave suspended
Terrell Owens for one week after the volatile wide receiver had an angry encounter with coach Andy Reid on Wednesday.
The exchange occurred after Reid questioned Owens on why he did not attend a scheduled autograph session for the second time in a week, according to media reports.
After the argument, Reid suspended Owens from the team's training camp at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.
"It was a difference of opinion," Owens told Comcast SportsNet during an interview at his Morristown, New Jersey home.
"I think the report is now that I was blowing my fans off. That's not the case.
"When I'm out there on the field, I'm tending to my business," he added. "They're telling me to go out there and perform and practice, and that's what I've been doing.
"Just because I don't talk to everybody, you know, that's up to me."
The 31-year-old Owens is one of the NFL's most gifted receivers and will be starting the second season of a seven-year, $49 million contract.
He is trying to renegotiate his contract but the Eagles have refused, saying the 10-year veteran has a binding deal.
The flashy, big-play receiver had 77 catches last season for 1,200 yards and 14 touchdowns, and was a key reason the Eagles advanced to the Super Bowl.
Owens has been hobbled during training camp with an injured groin.
"They don't pay me to go in there and talk to everybody and be friendly to everybody," Owens said. "They pay me to play and they pay me to perform. So that's what I've been doing.
"When I haven't been outside signing autographs, I've been on the inside (rehabilitating) my groin. And that's what happened today."
The Eagles were silent on the issue but issued a brief statement.
"Terrell Owens has been sent home from training camp due to undisclosed team issues. He is expected to return to the team Wednesday, August 17th."
Owens, who spent the first eight years of his career with the
San Francisco 49ers, has often been controversial -- or comical -- depending on one's opinion of his many antics.
The wide receiver once pulled a pen from his sock and signed the football for a fan after scoring a touchdown.
