Guys, since my own date for purchasing a mp3 player is nearing, I will like others commandeer this thread and ask for recommendations:

I would like
* an mp3 player I can use while I'm running
What are all the kinds of drives out there that they have? And what's the difference?
* an mp3 player that delivers loud, clear enough sound
I'll be using cheapo headphones to listen. I do not need uber audio geek million dollar player. If I want to hear something in all its rich, crisp, deep tones, I'll play it at home on a stereo that's meant for that kind of thing.
* storage between 512mb up to 5 or 6gb.
No need to carry around everything on the player if it costs significantly extra.
* good battery
I don't mind if I have to charge the battery say every night or every other night, I just want it to last a decent amount of time (10+ hours), have a long life overall, and be easily replaceable.
* pocket sized
Small enough to fit in the average blue jeans or shirt pocket.
* fairly sturdy
We all hope we'll never do it, but a lot of times we just drop our fancy expensive things, like cameras, or cell phones, or heirlooms...does any model survive a hard fall? Not that I won't treat it like precious material.
* ease of use
How easily can I turn it on, select songs, charge the battery, transfer files, how good does it work with ID3 tags, how good does it work with playlists, are the buttons useable for people with slow uncoordinated fingers like me, etc...
* features
Least important thing to me. If it can play songs with all the things I've outlined above, great. But if there's any model that does it all, I'd like an FM radio, a recorder, and for it to double as a removeable drive. That's it. I can't think of any way I will ever use anything else it comes with.
* I don't care if it's a color/b&w screen, or what colors and shapes the actual player comes in.

The only ones I've looked at in depth are the Zen Micro and the iPod Mini, and I think I would choose the Micro of the two, but I still am uncertain.

First, that Battery University article refers to all lithium-ion batteries, not just Apple batteries. When he says 300-500 discharge/charge cycles, he means full discharge/charge cycles. You do a full discharge about once a month. The partial charge/discharges that you do in between don't count. Btw, Apple and Creative probably buy their batteries at the same place. You'll remind me that the Zen touch lasts a month. That's because its so huge they can put a laptop battery in it.

Second, the first statement is false. The iPod Mini's battery lasts longer than the Zen Micro's.

If you plan to run with it, you need a Flash player. So the Zen micro and the iPod mini are excluded. Running with a hard drive player isn't recommended.

But if each charge only gets you 15 hours instead of 24, the charges occur faster and hence the battery dies faster.

Partial charges actually kill the battery quicker as well. It's actually recommended to always do a full charge for maximum life.

I just got a 512mb iRiver. Perfect for me - small, good sound, great battery life for it's size (apparently 40hrs on a AA battery, probably closer to 25 with a decent bitrate), very easy to operate and set up (took me about 5 minutes from the time I opened the package to the time I had music on it, and I'm not a complete tech geek), has an FM tuner, equalizer with numerous settings and the ability to customize, voice recording (which I'll never, ever use) and can be used to store any type of data.

This is total different from what I have heard. I heard that you should always try to fully discharge the battery and then recharge it fully.

Not for lithium-ion, but for NiCad, yes.

And I have to charge it every night....it gets pretty empty during the day.

I'm hoping that they send me one of the new ones when I return it.

I have to say what several posters already said: I've heard that the battery lasts longer if you fully discharge it before "filling it up" again
I've also heard that if you're planning on not using the MP3 player for a long time it's a good idea to fully discharge it before

That's true if you talk about the standard iPod, not the iPod Mini.

Wether you agree or not is beside the point. If the battery experts agree with the Battery University recommendations, then you should change your mind. If they do not agree with these recommendations, then I should change my mind.

Not all battery experts agree with "Battery University".

IBM, for example, says otherwise of the Li-Ion batteries it designs and uses with its devices...

I was at CompUSA today and played around with some of the MP3 players there, including the Zen Micro, iPod, and the Sony Network Walkman.

The competition has, IMO, not come close to matching the ease of use offered by the iPod wheel. The Micro had a decent interface, but it was much less "smooth" when compared to the iPod. Couldn't compare sound or any other feature than this.

I agree. If Apple hadn't copyrighted the click-wheel, a lot of competitors would sport one.
