I've got one, but I don't use it often because the battery runs out too damn fast. Its probably been months since I used it.

But I did see a neat add-on at Best Buy that lets you run the ipod out of your cigarette lighter in your car, and blast the music out over your car's radio at the same time. That looks ideal. Whenever I have an extra $30 to spend, I'll get that and actually use my ipod.

I have something like that for my Zen. It charges from the car and I have a "cassette tape" that plugs into the headphone jack and you insert into the cassette player.

The Zen Micro has a battery life around 12 hours; the Zen Touch has 24 hours of playback @ 128kbps MP3 playback, or 32 hours at 48 kbps.

The iPod apparently only has, at best, a 15 hour battery life.

How disappointing.

The iPod Mini has 18 hours, IIRC...

They are all losers to Sony's new NW-HD5, which as ~40 hours of battery life.

Well, if you are interested in better looks for your mp3 player, you can't do better than an iPod or iPod mini .

I thought the Zen Touch's selling point according to those like Asher was features and performance?

I want the player that has the best combination of features and aesthetics. Longer battery life, built-in FM ability, etc, etc.

The new iPods do, but I reckon a lot of that is due virtually everyone else actually putting in a non-crappy battery and bumping up the battery life.

The older iPods were 8 hours, a complete joke.

Apple still loses in the most critical parts of the MP3 player -- sound quality, battery life, and freedom of (legal) sources.

They have the "chic"/Abercrombie factor holding them up.

It's funny that I have constantly compared Apple to Abercrombie & Fitch, and now an Apple executive is leaving Apple to join...Abercrombie & Fitch.

Ipod minis have 8 hours....mine is 8 months old and I barely get 4....I charge it every night and will return it before the 1 year waranty which states that you have at least 50% of the adverted battery life.

The sucky part is that you cannot just replace the freaking battery...the case is glued together.

Other than that, is has awesome sound and a good navigation system.

Not the new ones... the new minis are rated at 18 hours.

http://reviews.cnet.com/Apple_iPod_...-5.html?tag=top

quote:
Apple claims the internal battery takes between 2 and 4 hours to rejuice and lasts 18 hours on a single charge--this is just about on par with the Rio Carbon's battery life and significantly better than the iPod Mini's previously rated time of 12 hours. In our tests, the iPod Mini beat this time by a little more than 3 hours, eking out 21.1 hours of tunes.

And you shouldn't charge your battery every night, that makes batteries wear down quicker.

Yep, I have a iPod Mini and the battery lasts about 18 hours. You guys should really read the manual on how to take care of the battery.

http://www.ipodbatteryfaq.com/

http://www.batteryuniversity.com/parttwo-34.htm

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61385

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61434

From the battery university:

quote:
A lithium-ion battery provides 300-500 discharge/charge cycles. The battery prefers a partial rather than a full discharge. Frequent full discharges should be avoided when possible. Instead, charge the battery more often or use a larger battery. There is no concern of memory when applying unscheduled charges.

Although lithium-ion is memory-free in terms of performance deterioration, batteries with fuel gauges exhibit what engineers refer to as "digital memory". Here is the reason: Short discharges with subsequent recharges do not provide the periodic calibration needed to synchronize the fuel gauge with the battery's state-of-charge. A deliberate full discharge and recharge every 30 charges corrects this problem. Letting the battery run down to the cut-off point in the equipment will do this. If ignored, the fuel gauge will become increasingly less accurate. (Read more in 'Choosing the right battery for portable computing', Part Two.)

Aging of lithium-ion is an issue that is often ignored. Depending on the state-of-charge and storage temperature, lithium-based batteries have a typical lifetime of 2-3 years (longer if partially charged and kept cool). The clock starts ticking as soon as the battery comes off the manufacturing line.

quote:
Simple Guidelines

* Avoid frequent full discharges because this puts additional strain on the battery. Several partial discharges with frequent recharges are better for lithium-ion than one deep one. Recharging a partially charged lithium-ion does not cause harm because there is no memory. (In this respect, lithium-ion differs from nickel-based batteries.) Short battery life in a laptop is mainly cause by heat rather than charge / discharge patterns.

* Batteries with fuel gauge (laptops) should be calibrated by applying a deliberate full discharge once every 30 charges. Running the pack down in the equipment does this. If ignored, the fuel gauge will become increasingly less accurate and in some cases cut off the device prematurely.

* Keep the lithium-ion battery cool. Avoid a hot car. For prolonged storage, keep the battery at a 40% charge level.

* Consider removing the battery from a laptop when running on fixed power. (Some laptop manufacturers are concerned about dust and moisture accumulating inside the battery casing.)

* Avoid purchasing spare lithium-ion batteries for later use. Observe manufacturing date. Do not buy old stock, even if sold at clearance prices.

* If you have a spare lithium-ion battery, use one to the fullest and keep the other cool by placing it in the refrigerator. Do not freeze the battery. For best results, store the battery at 40% state-of-charge.

This part is important.

Not only do Apples batteries not last as long as the competition, but they'll die faster too. Not only do they not last as long and die faster, but they're not meant to be easily replaced and will cost you more to replace a dead battery than other products.
