what do you generally play?

I'm generally at the SNGs.

Right now at 20$ level

Am rebuilding my bankroll to be able to play at the higher levels again. I've got enough to start playing 30s again. In a couple of weeks I should be at 50s.

If I have a good run there I'll start playing a mix of 50s and 100s again (100s seem to be no more difficult than 50s, strangely enough)

Could someone please explain to a poker noob how to tell the difference between the games where you can win with this hand and where you can't:


A 2 3 4 5

It seems random when this counts as a straight or not

Cash game nl is simply a question of sitting and waiting. Much less forced action because blinds don't increase, and you can refill your chip stack if you catch a run of crappy cards.

I'm better at tourneys too. The overall strategic thought (knowing that the blinds are increasing, knowing that the table will slowly get shorter, knowing that if you go broke it's the end of you etc) are all factors that don't play in a cash game. My strategy is rather different for the two.

If you're playing for low then sometimes straights count against you. Sometimes they don't.

I've lost a lot of (play) money because of that hand. Last time I played the game (many many months ago) I had that hand and thought to my self that I had a great hand so I put in a lot of money... I lost to a pair

Then today as I finally started again I had this hand, but remembering back to the last time I had such hand and decided not to play on it (since all I had was a high card). Since nobody placed a bet I got to the end of that game and was suprised as I won the game

That might explain it. Sometimes I play in the 1-10$ range, but today I play in the 25-50$ range

Sometimes aces are low and straights don't count. Then the best hand is a2345

I have no clue why you would lose that hand. Sounds like a weird game to me. Are you sure you didn't misread your hand?

Wait, thinking back there might be some truth in the type of game played afterall. I remember playing a bit Omaha from time to time back then, might have been it... almost forgot that I played a few games of that type

Personally, I hate it, but there are a lot of people that specialise in it.

One really interesting game is omaha 8 or better

It's an Omaha game where the pot is split between the high hand and the low hand (except the low hand has to be an 8 or better to count, hence the name)

In Omaha that straight counts too, but it's very easy to misread your hand.

You have to use exactly two of your hole cards, so if you're holding 3 9 10 Q and the board comes A2458 then you do not have a straight. You have nothing.

That's one thing I'm sure about is not the case, since whenever I lose a hand I'm very sure about winning I always checks the winning hand a second time

Ahh, didn't know about that, thx. Does that rule apply for all poker games or just Omaha?

In HE you can use none, one or both your hole cards
