I bought Victoria Support Apolyton buy from Amazon

Because I've heard it talked about on here and it was $3.

Right now it seems pretty confusing. I'll read the manual and try again in the morning. Any tips, comments on the game from Apolytoners?

In general, Paradox's manuals are crap. You should check here instead for reliable info:

The learning curve is pretty harsh. We had threads about Victoria when Oerdin first bought it. You may want to look at our Paradox subforum: It's likely to be more accessible to you than the genuine Paradox ones, because we aren't power players.

Frankly, based on the reviews I read, it doesn't look like a very good game. So I didn't buy it. But for 3 bucks, I guess mrmitchell could get his money's worth. The only Paradox game I would recommend is Europa Universalis 2. Again, the learning curve is steep, but the game is pretty good. Hearts of Iron 2 looks pretty good also, but I haven't tried it yet. I was impatiently waiting for the first one, but then when I read the reviews, I didn't buy it.

It's been forgotten by Paradox. The much needed 1.4 patch has been in stasis for over a year now, I think.

Tired of ads?

Crusader Kings is the only one that I would call *active*. There are beta patches released for it constantly and people are kept up to date about what is being done with it.

Europa Universalis 2 still gets the occasional update, although it really doesn't need any at this point. (It's Johan's favorite game, so he'll keep refining it)

Hearts of Iron 2 and Victoria both have patches that are expected, but no specifics on what or when. I'm skeptical that Victoria will ever be updated at this point.

I've heard lots of good things about the Europa Universalis series... Don't see them much in real life shops anymore, though...

I have one game from Paradox, Airfix Dogfighter. It's ok, but not much more (no challenge, really)... Cool idea, though...

You fly Airfix's plastic plane models, dogfighting other planes, bombing tanks and buildings etc as you go through missions in a house...

Not a simulator, more like an action game... A game to play even in 10-15 minutes sessions as a distraction...

Europa Universalis 2. (Hearts of Iron would be my second choice, and I haven't really played HOI II).

3 ways to answer that

1. Which period in history are you most interested in?These games really are very much about their subject matter - im sure there people who enjoy them just for their mechanics, etc. but given both the nature of these games, and my own focus, its hard for me to contemplate that.

2. What kind of game are you most interested in? EU2 is a little bit high level war game, a little bit simcity building game, simsociety, etc. I havent played the others, but my sense is that Victoria is much MORE simsociety, economics, and less war, while HOI and HOI2 are more war games (though still at the grand strategic level) CK is said to be more RPish. (though RP CAN be part of playing EU2, if you want it to be)

3. General game play mechanics - EU2 is widely considered the "best" most finished, most balanced of the bunch. all the others have their fans, but also have key criticisms.

I bought Europa Universalis (the first one) a long time ago, but never really installed it. I think the humongous manual scared me a little bit.

That Victoria sucks, for example, that its a micromanagement nightmare.

If you look at Gamerankings, Victoria has an average score of 60%, whereas Europa Universalis 2 has an average score of 86%. Hearts of Iron 2 has an average of 84%. And Crusader Kings 75%.

Victoria is too complicated for most people, but is a really great game... it just hasn't been polished to the same standard as other Paradox games, and it shows quite badly once you've played it for a while.

Europa Universalis is probably the most enjoyable paradox game if you are just looking for a broad strategy game.

Hearts of Iron is the best if you are more interested in a war-game than the more broader aproach other paradox games take.

Crusader Kings is the best if you want a more thematic or roleplay type game.

I like Victoria very much, but it really depends on what you're looking for in a game. In a word, Victoria looks like work, but a work I'd love to be doing There's a pretty fine-tuning of the economy, and the political system is probably the best ever released in a game. The "micromamangement hell" criticism is valid, but you don't have to micromanage like crazy if you aren't a power player, or if you aren't playing with a big country (in any case, don't play as China, it's way too big)

by the way, Doc, why not ask in the poly Paradox games forum as well. There may be some folks who check there more often then they check here. And heaven knows we could use more activity in that forum, and who better than you to provide it?

I've played HOI2 and find it to be pretty good. The grand strategy is done well and I like the time frame involved. It definately is a work in progress though. There are certain events that will screw you if you deviate from the historical path, which is annoying. You have to go in and edit the files to prevent some of these or things get messed up.

I've stopped playing because I'm addicted to Guild Wars and will likely pick it up again once it gets patched to 1.3.
