I´m fine with using the official abbr. when being among Americans only, but I doubt I could guess more than half of those (and sadly I belong to the geographically better educated folks over here)...

The official Swedish provincial abbreviations contain some real gems:

AB - Stockholm
W - Dalecarlia
H - Kalmar
Z - Jamtland
I - Gotland

AC - West Bothnia

He's right, Illinois owns IL.

And Delaware owns DE. Germany could be DE2 or DE jr or wannabe DE.

Likewise, if Az capitalized the "Z" in his name, he's suddenly "Arizona". So he was smart not to do that.

It'll be like the European constitution. No one here will care or notice, especially since it will never be popular and they'll never agree on it anyways. But I fully support their attempt to follow America's lead.

If the country also has numerals to distinguish the region, I suggest we use these numerals.

I'm from Ngn, 94, FR, EU. But currently I'm living in S, DE, EU (In DE, big cities are their own adminitrative district)
