Harry Potter, pissing off crazy Catholics
quote: July 14,2005 | BERLIN -- In a letter sent two years before becoming pope, Benedict XVI expressed concern that the Harry Potter books "erode Christianity in the soul" of young people, a German writer says.
The comments came in an exchange of letters between then-Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger and Gabriele Kuby, a Bavarian-based Roman Catholic sociologist who penned a book criticizing J.K. Rowling's blockbusters.
In a letter dated March 7, 2003, the text of which could be seen Thursday on Kuby's Web site, Ratzinger thanked her for sending him a copy of "your informative book."
"It is good that you are throwing light on Harry Potter, because these are subtle seductions that work imperceptibly, and because of that deeply, and erode Christianity in the soul before it can even grow properly," the letter added.
The Vatican had no comment, noting that the pontiff -- a Bavarian native -- and his secretary were away on vacation.
Kuby argues in her book, "Harry Potter -- Good or Evil," that the Potter novels blur the boundaries between good and evil and impair young readers' ability to distinguish between the two. She also asserts that they glorify the world of witches and magicians at the expense of the human world.
Christians in the United States have made similar criticisms.
Kuby said Thursday that she sent her book to Ratzinger -- then the Vatican's doctrinal watchdog -- after he commented favorably on an earlier book she wrote, "My Way to Mary."
In an e-mailed response to questions, she said she did not correspond with Ratzinger about Potter again after seeking his permission to cite his judgment later in 2003.
Ratzinger wrote on May 27 that year that "I gladly permit you to cite my opinion on Harry Potter," according to Kuby.
Rowling's sixth Potter book, "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince," is due out Saturday. |

I preordered it. It was 40% off. Hope it will be better than the last two.
Btw, I just saw Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence and all I have to say is wow! Very impressive! They're really pushing the limits of anime! And I just received Ghost in the Shell : stand alone complex vol. 3, The Prisoner (set 1) (yes, the TV series!) and Tarkovsky's Solaris from Zip.ca (the Canadian version of Netflix).

Publisher should charge like triple price on first day of sale. I bet all of you superfans will still buy it.

You can cross off OotP, because they didn't face off alone. Remember Dumbledore swoops in? As for the other books, Voldemort wasn't at full strength, until GoF, and Harry gets off by some luck.
If Harry and Voldemort ever have to fight alone against each other again, Dumbledore just looks more incompetant than he did in his speech at the end of OotP. If Dumbledore is alive, why in the Hell would he risk Harry even meeting Voldemort alone again? |
I've pointed out three instances where Harry faces Voldemort entirely alone, and one where he faces Voldemort alone for quite some time until Dumbledore shows up.
That's a great scene, BTW. "It was foolish of you to come here tonight, Tom."
It's a possible theory for Book seven. But I doubt the Order can hold itself together long without Dumbledore. It would be interesting to see Severus Snape running the order for a year, but I doubt that will happen.
I'm not categorically denying that Dumbledore will die, but I don't think this is his book.

Two times where Voldemort was NOT fully formed. You can see Dumbledore's plan to train Harry by letting him learn it on his own. While Voldemort was not fully formed, you say, ok, the plan seems reasonable there (even though there are near missses).
The third time seems like incompetance by Dumbledore. He SHOULD have stepped it and it seems like he didn't even think Voldemort would try such a thing.
You would have expected Dumbledore to never allow that again... and he DOESN'T.
I just went back to the passage in OotP where Voldemort shows up. He doesn't face Voldemort AT ALL before Voldemort shows up. You are confusing it with Harry facing Bellatrix. Voldemort shows up, Bellatrix grovels, Voldemort looks to Harry and says "Avada Kevadra" and then Dumbledore intervenes. Harry doesn't fight Voldy alone.
It shows the Dumbledore has learned his lesson and won't be caught on his heels like in GoF again.

I can also see it happening in Book 7, but there is a prediction of a big death in this one as well. It either has to be Lupin, a Weasley parent, or Dumbledore to be 'big' enough, IMO.
I think Dumbledore bites it at the very, very end of the book... providing a sad ending and a question of how the Order survives in the next book without him. A great cliffhanger.
Oh, if Dumbledore kicks it, I think Lupin would run the Order. He seemed to be second in charge in OotP.
