There were a few good historical bitties....the fact the is well accepted today, which is that Hadrian's Wall was not some sort of rigid frontier beyond which 'here be dragons', but that there were in fact many Roman estates on the north side of the wall...

the movie Saxons were a little over the top...the real saxons were fairly impressed with the romano-british culture...not that that stopped them from showing their appreciation in the usual germanic mode...

The sarmatian thing was a bit of a stretch...I thought we'd see a bunch of romano-british 'equites'..

EDIT: Braided beards

Whoever thought that the saxons were really hells angels?

Most people don't realise that there were a fair number of saxons in Britain even before the romans pulled out. They had been hired as mercenaries to guard the coast from saxons sea raids. Evidently before the vikings made their appearence the saxons were the sea raiders that the coastal folks of western europe feared.

Wait, so King Arthur's tale tells me the Saxons were an utter bunch of bastards, yet Robin Hood's sotry tells me the Saxon's were these great guys under the boot of Norman tyranny.

So what is it, oppressed pansies or bloodthirsty gits?

Robin Hood took place generations after King Arthur. By then, the successfully invading Saxons, Angles and Jutes and in turn been successfully invaded by the Norman French. IIRC, Richard the Lionhearted was the great grandson of Duke William Bastard aka "The Conqueror"

We all know that.

The point is, can;t we assume the Saxons deserved what they got after what they did to the poor Celts?

Nah, this thread doesn't make any sense at all. Oh, the saxons acted bad and didn't abide to th e UN charters, well, neither did the romans, greeks, egypts, inkas, mayas, chinese, japanese, mongols, vikings and all of those I don't know the name of but was pretty busy in attacking their neighbours.

Claiming that the saxons should be considered nazi's on that behalf is just plain redicule.

I wanted to walk out after about 20 minutes, cuz I realised how bad it was.

Unfortunately, my friend was my lift and he was enjoying it. God knows why.

The really interesting link between King Arthur and Robin Hood is that a very large portion of William's army were Bretons and that William was half Breton, so in a way the Norman conquest was payback.

Just because romans, greeks, egypts, inkas, mayas, chinese, japanese, mongols, vikings and all of those you don't know the name of didn't abide to the UN charters it does not mean the Saxons have an excuse for not caring about the UN.

Stargate. King Arthur was an Ancient. Merlin was a Goa'uld.

Question: Who was worse -- Goa'ulds or Saxons?

By the time the the saxons arrived in what is now england the inhabitants wern't celts they were anglo romans. Some of them moved west or north and became assimilated into celtic culture. The only reason celtic people toady moan about their treatment hundreds of years ago is because they wern't powerful enought o be horrible to their neighbours on a large scale. Everyone in the dark ages-medieval period were bastards, some just had more sword than others.

Suffering from ads?

How could they have been "anglo-romans" if the Angles hadn't even arrived in Britain yet? Perhaps they could have been called britano-romans, or celto-romans.
