I don't own an iBook personally, but from what I've gathered during my research, I've found a couple recurring themes on Mac forums, etc.
1. The iBook keyboard is considered sub-par in quality when compared to that of the PowerBook. Also, the letters and numbers can wear out, so several iBook users had suggested getting a product called the iSkin - protects from crumbs, liquids getting into the keyboard, as well as keeping the paint from wearing off.
2. The screen brightness and resolution is another source of complaint, which the resolution not increasing from the 12'' to 14''; also, IIRC, the 14'' screen is not as bright as the 12''.
Overall, the iBook is considered and reviewed as a durable, high-quality laptop. It's only shortcomings seem to be the standard 256MB of RAM it ships with; on whole, the technology used is somewhat dated when compared to Windows-based equivalents, but not too much. For the tasks that the High School is wanting the iBook to be used for, it is perfect (ie it will not run the latest and greatest computer games, which could be a plus for you as parents).

Hey i just got a new mac ibook G4. my boss is a big fan of mac so after listening to him.... and also checking out other computers and prices that might fit my needs and budget... I determined that the ibook G4 would be the best. I was right and I got the bundle that goes with it..windows for mac and it's fantastic too. Up loading pics and movies for a camera is really easy. I just got it 5 days ago and I can't stay off of it. I think your son's school made a good choice. I also have internal internet. When I go onto airport it asks for a password too but since I am not always in my allowable area I either need a password to sign onto someone elses port or once in a while there is one open without a password. I am not sure this is a good idea but for now everything is blocked and firewall is turned on. I don't use it for bank stuff but if I do I will need to check into it.

There's a persistent rumour that the ibook line is about to be updated with widescreen models. An ibook would play WOW, but a Powerbook is probably better. I get decent speeds with the default settings, allthough I could use more RAM in the thing.
Mrs T - have you tried Exposé yet? Or Garageband?

I like the keyboard, but it isn't to everyone's taste.

That's a legit complaint. The new models will hopefully fix this. One way of fixing it is to use one of the calibrators you can download for free. That tends to make a difference, but Apple could do better here.

It's a consumer laptop designed for college students and domestic use. It's not a games machine, and it isn't designed for pro-video editing or graphics. If you are any sort of power user at all, you really need the Powerbook. I have the 12" Powerbook. I thought about getting the 15", but it is too big for me. I love the small form factor of the 12". Drake Tungsten has an ibook he's had for years. I had one on loan a couple of years ago and I thought it was a great machine for schoolwork. If you do get one, get more RAM. It will make a big difference.
I know people who still use the old toilet seat ibooks. They look silly (and lame compared to the current models), but they still work perfectly after five years.

I got the 12" too. They make a back pack that fits it. It had just come out the day before I got the book, which makes it also much easier on the back. I have heard that carrying a bag (back pack (on one sholder) or single stap band) can mold your spine so that you walk crooked, especially if it is way too heavy. The twelve inch and the back pack (carried by both sholders) combined reduces the possiblity of this urban legend.
