If you could hit a button to alter reality... Browse Apolyton AD-FREE

Would you hit the button to change to an alternate reality where Firaxis chose SMAC 2 as the game being released in Nov.?

Or would you lay off the button, sit back and type a thank you email to Firaxis for choosing to make Civ 4 instead?

I choose SMAC 2.

Better stick with Civ 4.

What if my mother was killed in the alternate reality before I was born? Would my vote in this poll even count?

SMAC 2, but without Brian running it, I think it would fail to impress.

actually, the main reason for this poll was because I just started playing the game again and it dawned on me how enjoyable it is in most respects.

As I was playing, I noticed how some parts of the game are most certainly outdated and could use an upgrade...hence my alternate reality poll...to see how many agreed with me.

It seems like SMAC 2 should have been next. We had Civ 3, I would have liked SMAC2 then Civ 4, etc..

Or even a simultaneous release.

I get the feeling that SMAC is getting pushed to the back burner in favor of Civ.

And I guess I can see why. Civ is more famous of a franchise and can make more money I guess.

It just hurts to see such a worthy game rot.

Civ was the original and will draw a larger audience, so of course they'll push that over SMAC2.

I always liked Civ better anyway

Suffering from ads?

I think it's the sci-fi "futuristic" aspect that makes SMAC edge Civ out for me.

I love the reality of civ, but when smac came out, the sci-fi aspect was intriguing. (sp?)

Well, on the Firaxis site there is this bit:

quote:
Question: Do you think there will be a follow up to Alpha Centauri? I just restarted playing it - after having been able to NOT play for a few years - and here we go again; all-nighters when my alarm clock tells me to go to work or get some sleep.
Sid: We get lots of requests from fans asking us to make another Alpha Centauri…and we’ve been talking about it quite a bit lately. So…it’s definitely a possibility down the road. Go get those Spartans!

I realize that posting this poll in this forum is kind of like walking into the lions den, but this is the most appropriate place.

I contemplated putting it in the AC forum, and I might, but this still seemed like the place.

I love Civ. and smac. I suck at 'em, but I love 'em.

I liked smac, but for the graphics and the pathetic ai. the prototypical example of a game having so many features that the human can use but the AI has no clue, thus a walk in the park to win.

thanks for the honest input.

I will definitely buy civ4!!!

But, I wanted to see how many CIV lovers long for a Smac 2. I am a CIV lover.

I'm wondering what made those who thought Smac 1 was worthwhile all of a sudden think Smac 2 wasn't worth the time...

Did Smac not do well in sales?

I don't really see a lack of interest in a SMAC2. It looks to me like people would just like to see Civ4 first. That may be partly because of the exciting previews or just personal preference. Either way, I see good market potential for SMAC2 at Apolyton. We'll just have to wait and see if the rest of the game community will agree.

Civ IV definitely.

Its not that I'm not interested in seeing SMAC 2 (I loved SMAC and a sequel would definitely be a good thing), but...

1. I'm looking forward to Civ IV far more the more I see of it.

2. I'd like to see a Colonization II before SMAC II.

It is interesting that I am reading only SciFi and fantasy books for pleasure, I prefer to watch SciFi movies, but I never got into SMAC. The reasons:

1) Non-descriptive technologies. "By researching this I am getting what better armor or new building? Can't even guess"
2) Units. "This unit has what armor? a photon? Is this because it is white? And is it good armor?..."
3) Design workshop " Where is that design 46? Scroll, scroll..."

too dark. I wish it looked like that wonder movie. You know the one where Deirdre is talking and the camera is moving fast over the landscape of Planet. The red fungus looks bright red there, I like that look over the dark red.

I still love the game though. The gameplay is amazing.

And that's an example of a game with more complexity. Sure it makes the AI not as good. But I don't care. At least there are many more intersting things to do in that game over civ3. Civ3 was just too limiting. I liked the game, but got bored of it sooner than I had hoped.

I'm eager to get Civ4 into my hand, but I liked SMAC a lot, too - it was the novelty, I guess... playing somewhere else than on earth, disover new things. I'd definitely like to see a follow-up there too.

I guess the answer depends on what we would be able to do by altering reality... could I put Brian back on SMAC 2's team and have them use the Civ4 engine and give them part of Bill Gate's fortune for development so they could hire a few renowned artists to contribute to the SMAC world?

If all that were possible, I'd choose SMAC.

But then I could also add a second team to work on Civ4 at the same time... Which would in turn open tremendous possibilites - imagine playing a Civ4 game, and in the end you launch the spaceship to Alpha Centauri... you would then seamlessly switch to SMAC 2 and continue playing there. Aaaaah, yesssss
