I'm changing my spark plugs. Support Apolyton, buy Galactic Civilizations

Damn, Dodge really does use gorillas with impact wrenches to install those things.

I needed to put a 4 ft pipe on a breaker bar to loosen the damn thing, and the 2 ft extension I needed to put the socket on was on the brink of doing something unfortunate when the plug finally gave.

I just discovered the boots on the replacement wires I bought for the job are both considerably longer than the OEM boots, and have the connector closer to the opening of boot.

Plugs look good, just worn -- gap is nearly double the original spec, which probably explains my cold/wet starting problems.

I think I'll Just keep the OEM wires -- they appear to be sound, even after seven years and 105,000 miles.

Couple questions:

Do I need to add more dielectric grease if I am not changing out the wires?

How dependable is the reading on a torque wrench?

Put an end to popups!

Some people use dielectric grease, some don't. I do, and I believe the manufacturers recommend it. I would assume you would need to use a small amount, unless the gorilla who put on the original plugs also used enough grease for a certain kind of sex. Then you won't.

A good torque wrench is quite accurate. A cheap one can be terrible. Check online, if I remember correctly hand tighten until it is snug, it's like a quarter or half a turn past that. Somebody has got to have that old tip online. However, I have a good torque wrench I've used for fifteen years so I've lost the touch.

BTW - I also break my wheel nuts loose too, and then retighten to whatever the specs say, usually 90 someodd foot-pounds. If you are stuck in the middle of the night with a flat tire, in pouring rain, while jumping up and down and the lug wrench (and slipping off and scraping your hands), well, you finally get enough adrenalin toe break the f**ker loose. It's MUCH easier when the lug nuts are not tightened to 200 foot pounds.

Grease? Never used it.

Torque wrench? Never used it.

Put the new plugs in by hand until snug, then tighten maybe 1/4 turn. You dont need much muscle to tighten plugs. And be careful putting the socket onto the plugs, porcelain/ceramic exterior can crack pretty easy. New plugs made for your specific engine should already be gapped but its wise to gap at least 1 plug to make sure and then visually compare the other plugs to the one you checked.

Five out of eight completed, I need to remove the air cleaner to have any chance at the other three, that happens tomorrow.

I decided to use the grease -- it should keep the moisture out if nothing else. Thanks, guys.

The torque wrench in question is a Craftman beam type -- the kind with two parallel bars, which measures the torque by measuring how far the main bar bends.

The reading was...erratic, and I was afraid I was about to strip the threads trying to hit the mark. After that, I decided to go with the "half turn after hand tight" recomended on the box the plugs came in.

Is there such a thing as too much anti-sieze compound?

Berz - thanks, as I said, I couldn't remember if it was a quarter or a half turn.

Mad Monk - those beam type torsion bars are drekh. A good click type is MUCH easier to use, and more accurate. Mine is also a Craftsman, and it's one of the best purchases I ever made.
