Can we ever be trusted again? Support Apolyton, buy Civilization III: Complete

I read that the new AI (crossing fingers) will be far more intelligent then their Civ3 predecessors (not hard to accomplish).

I also read that the AI will be able to remember your actions much better... (such as Ghandi not being happy with your wars and if you change civics often just for the purposes of a deal) but I wonder if anyone knows or speculates that the AI would be able to "forgive our past actions" of sorts.

Historically, vendettas between nations sometimes burn through all time, and some burn out. I was wondering what the capabilities the AI will have for forgiveness?

(Possibly over 50-100 turns they start to pull back to neutral if you dont violate any treaties?)

Any thoughts? Info?

The CtP mod, Ages of Man, has an interesting model for this (I'm testing it only now, so no real experience yet). The aggression level of the AI changes as follows:

+6: if the human captures an AI city
+1: ("there is a chance") if the human attacks an AI stack
-1: random chance each turn
-1: for each 200 gold offered to AI
-6: if that AI captures one your cities

If the level is below 25, the AI will do nothing special. Between 25-100, the AI will become aggressive. Over 100 and the AI adopts all-out-war (but not all one-sided necessarily).

So when you capture an AI city your allies will also become more aggressive against you? At least, that is what this simple system says...

I think it's understood that it doesn't apply to your allies, but I am just quoting material I haven't tested yet. Sorry I can't be more definitive. But it's interesting to see how other games are tackling this issue.

Well, don't make it seem that the AI in Civ III was absolutely terrible. Although it wasn't great by any means, it was still better than Civ II and SMAC.

And let's not forget that situations make strange bedfellows of former rivals, such as England and France uniting in alliance vs. Germany in the two world wars, or the current situation where Germany and France appear to be the strongest of allies. Uniting against a common foe should garner improved relations with rival nations.

I never thought that the CivIII AI was that bad at diplomacy, but rather strategy.

I'd say it's more like the opposite, the AI was "better" with strategy than it was with diplomacy
But of course nothing can be worse than the AI diplomacy in Civ3... or do you call it good diplomacy when the world is at war in a "every nation for himself" at the end of the game?

The reason why AI Strategy was so terrible was because it was not designed to effectively use mass groups of units, the diplomacy was (IMO) always was at a loss, and I always wished for more options from it. *I have high hopes for CIV

Maybe they should bring back reputation from Civ2/SMAC. If you go raping and pillaging whole continants, along with constantly breaking treaties then other civs should be less willing to ally with you and more likely to unite against you. Whereas if you never broke your treaties, and maintained peaceful relations with your neighbors then the AI should be willing to unite with you against agressive AI's or players.

On a side note, when you have an alliance with a civ, every time you liberate one of their cities, it should revert to the allies control instead of your control (and vice versa).

jmp brought that up a while back. I think it's a good idea and, even if it's not in the vanilla game, hopefully it will be possible to mod it in.

The reputation in civ2 wou had people trespassing your borders (ok there are no borders in civ2), putting tons of troops near your cities, refusing to withdraw and you are considered as honorless if you strike them. But the ai will gladly ally themselves together even though they break treaties ten times more often than the player. Crap.

The civ3 AI had to cheat WAY less than SMAC or Civ2.

Good idea ! (though I doubt that we will see it in action)

..or, next turn after you conquered it, your ally should ask for an audience and ask for the city. Should you refuse, they would break the alliance.

... or, at least, giving it back to your allies would give you a reputation boost while keeping it would give you a reputation hit.

There is always place for improvement in diplomacy
