I've seen other things like this, and there certainly are alot of prehistoric representations of phalic-like symbols, but I don't see any reason to beleive that this would have necessarily been used as a dildo. Thats a very a-historical interpretation, and is based on the fact that most objects like that manufactured today, in our society, are used as such.

But its an interesting find. I'd say its nothing more than a symbolic object, maybe used in some kind of shamanic or divination procedure.

The ring around the typo does strongly suggest that it was deliberately phallic. And there is lots of evidence for other great apes using all sorts of things to get off on. Orang-utans and chimpanzees have been observed selecting and even manipulating sticks, stones, leaves and so on to fashion "tools" for masturbation. I think it isn't unlikely that the invention of stone technologies led to further developments in dildo technology.

As I learned in my archaeology class:

The most obvious answer is quite often the right one.

And by the looks of that, you'd have to strain quite a bit to come up with "shamanic or divination procedure".

Now, masturbation procedure, on the other hand, is far more plausible.
