I would, if those that controls the emergency units know their work - 40 firetrucks would make no sense and ambulances would come in a flow - not piled up. Toronto would still be alive and need support.

No confirmed deaths.

The 401 was partially closed causing a traffic nightmare, partly because survivors were running onto the highway while they were in shock/stunned/dazed/confused.

Survivor describes panic aboard crashed jet

CTV.ca News Staff

Describing the terrifying moments before an Air France passenger jet crashed at Toronto's Pearson International Airport, one survivor says the plane lost power before it hit the ground.

One of the passengers aboard the Air France flight 358 from Paris, France to Toronto Tuesday afternoon, Olivier Dubos, told CTV News there was no other warning before the crash.

"We didn't know at all what was happening. Really, we think the crew was as surprised as we were that we had to make an emergency landing," Olivier said.

"We had absolutely no insight or hint that the landing would be difficult," he added, noting there was some general concern due to the pelting rain at the time. "We just knew it would be a bit hard because of the weather."

Just moments before the landing, however, Olivier said the lights on the plane went out.

"The plane was going extremely fast and the power shut down completely, but we thought that was because of the rain ... Then we could feel were off road, and then it was really, really scary."

Once the plane ground to a halt some 200 metres off the runway, Dubos says there was a mad rush to flee.

"We were really, really scared that the plane would blow up because there were lots of flames," he said. "Everyone was running very hard to get out of there."

In a press conference less than three hours after the crash, Greater Toronto Airports Authority officials said all the plane's passengers are believed to have escaped alive. Just 14, they said, were being treated for minor injuries.

Debbie Wilkes, known to many Canadians as a figure skating commentator, happened to be in a slow-moving car on the nearby Highway 401 when the plane skidded off the runway.

Her attention had been transfixed, she said, because of rain and hail at the time.

"We were watching the storm unfold as we were stuck in traffic," she told CTV News. "We saw a fork of lightning come down and hit something... then there was a huge billowing plume of black smoke that emerged."

In the brief moment it took for the car to advance another few hundred feet, Wilkes said she saw that "it was a plane that had gone off the end of the runway... there were streaks of fire on the runway."

As emergency crews race to contain the scene of the crash, Toronto airport has been closed to other traffic.

Yeah, that's what I call a very lucky plane crash. Depending on how facts unfold when the case is investigated, might even call it a succesful. However it sure is a good showcase for how a plane can be well built and cope with a crash. Not to mention seems like the emergency operations on the ground were handled well. All in all I think we should be thankful, rather than blame someone. Indeed, the reasons to the crash must be investigated, but heck, why not grab a few cold beers and celebrate this honestly speaking good end? Very few airplanes ever manage crashes well. At least without any fatalities.

No, that Milan disaster was really a bad one And if I recall right there has been a SAS flight that ended in the sea in New York - just as bad.

I don't want to start some "this case is worser than this" - just mention that sometimes good thing happens. Though, the Stocholm incident was actually a potential disaster.

Toronto is a city of 4 million. It can spare a couple of dozen fire trucks and 100 ambulances if the need be. Easily.

Toronto emergency crews

Interesting that this happened almost 25 years to the day that a mircoburst caused the crash of an airplane in the U.S. That crash helped aviation authorities understand the power of microbursts, which might have caused this crash.

http://www.iht.com/articles/2005/07.../microburst.php

This crash reminds me of a crash in Hong Kong in 1999. An MD-11 flipped upside down, caught fire during a typhoon and yet there were only 3 deaths while about 300 passengers got out alive.

Very impressive. Kudos to the flight crew for helping to get everyone off the plane quickly.

The most dramatic sound byte was the one lady when asked how she got off the plane, she said she jumped, and when asked "through a window", she said, "no through a wall"

Rescuers sped to flaming jet in 52 seconds
Last Updated Wed, 03 Aug 2005 10:34:56 EDT
CBC News

Pearson International Airport fire trucks reached the scene of Tuesday's fiery crash landing just 52 seconds after the Air France plane touched down, the airport's fire chief said Wednesday.

"By that time, approximately three-quarters of the passengers had come down the chute and into the field," said Mike Figliola, fire chief with the Greater Toronto Airports Authority.

The speed of the response was matched only by the speed with which Air France Flight 358's 12-member crew got the 297 passengers away from the burning wreckage, Figliola said at a news conference. Everyone was out within two minutes, he said.

"The crew did a great job," he said. "This is what they're trained to do and they did it perfect."

Asked about reports that one or more of the aircraft's emergency chutes failed to open, leading to most of the minor injuries that 43 passengers and crew suffered, Figliola said: "Everybody got off, that's the bottom line. ...There was no loss of life and that's the bottom line for us."

The plane's co-pilot was the last person off the plane, airport officials told reporters gathered at Pearson Wednesday.

At that point, the rescue team's life-saving mission turned into the job of putting out the fire, which left the fuselage in three large pieces.

"Fifty yards away from the aircraft, my face was burning," said Figliola. "The fire was very, very intense."

Twelve hours after the accident, which occurred at 4:03 p.m. EDT Tuesday, the wreckage was still smouldering, he said.

The Transportation Safety Board has begun its investigation into the crash landing.

Air France has offered its full co-operation in the probe.

true enough but still bottom line no deaths ...i will take minor injuries over death anyday......read somewhere (in dutch) that the plane might just landed to far down the run way...this might explain the power out because the pilots put the power back on to make a fly by when they figured it out and that was to much to fast and the engines stalled...

So they're going to have an accident investigation, and yet prior to this you've already decided who's guilty and why.

Brilliant bit of precognition on your part. You should go into business with a crystal ball and a gypsy costume- call yourself Madame Arcati.
