Diplomacy in civ 4 Support Apolyton, buy Civilization: The Boardgame

How will the diplomacy be in Civ 4? I am thinking about trade embargos, alliances etc etc. Will it be more complex and better than in the last version? For example, will the AI opponent realize when he has no chance of winning? When he has nearly lost, will he perhaps be more reasonable and not reply with arrogant threats?

And this starts to worry me a lot. We may end up with the same dumb diplomacy of Civ3...

Why? Just because we don't get to know much yet doesn't mean it's not good. For all we know, it might be an ace they are keeping for later use/hype.

Diplomacy is the cornerstone of the game , Its where the AI meets the human player head to head in a sense.
Also shows how smart the AI is
But this is a area where much modding has been done in civilization games like CtP2 and Civ3. So whatever tweaking if any is needed we have many here who will be able to make changes

Put an end to popups!

My money is on that diplomacy will be largely the same, except with a few tweaks and changes.

I too maintain the same thought as Lord Nuclear concerning the Civ IV AI - hopefully, the few new tweaks/changes will at least improve the AI's overall behavior during diplomacy situations...

I read on the Firaxis site, in an interview there, that they you will be able to "broker" peace between 2 warring civs...or, get a civ to declare war on someone else even if you aren't at war with them. I know it's not much insight, but it's a start!

Yes, I remember that. I read it too.
A great start!

That is a good point and-given that the brokering of peace between two nations was in SMAC, it gave me some hope that other features of SMAC diplomacy would make their way into Civ4-including ability to base units in allied cities, forts and airfields; Protectorate/Vasselage agreements; Unit Trades. I also hope and pray that embargoes will actually mean something in Civ4, and that you can ask for-or give- a resource in trade, even if the other person already has it, but this would require a better modelling of resources and their use. I do believe, though, that religion, civics and AI personalities will all help to improve diplomacy to some degree-the only question is: HOW MUCH??
Anyway, fingers crossed!!

Yours,
Aussie_Lurker.

Help yourself to an AD-FREE life

From that screenie what I saw (that diplomacy one) I think I know what the diplomacy will be like.

If you'd like to know, get SMACX (Sid Meiers Alpha Centauri and the Alien Crossfire expansion pack) and try.

SMAC is a great game, but SMAX actually ruined the fun for me, despite it having a few good improvements...

Yes, I think we can't have really more than a few SMAC concept added and (hopefully) enough well managed by AI.

I can't believe in a Firaxis keeping a real ace hidden, at this point.
Hype is already spent to gain signatures on distribution / reselling contract.

IMHO they are keeping some game details secret because they must be forced to cut it later for bugs or unbalancing game logic.

The best diplomatic enhancement would be the UN. SMAC-style, not that poor excuse we had in Civ3. It's not the same face-to-face diplomacy, but the SMAC UN was one of the most fun things in it.

Unfortunately, there has been no word of a UN yet . So I'm afraid that hoping for a functional UN with resolutions is just wishful thinking.

Don't you know that 'Functional' and 'UN' cannot exist in the same universe? If they did, everything that exists would cease to be.

Put an end to popups!

I've watched the video interviewed and read some stuff...apparently, close ally's, or pact brothers, can research the same techs to get them faster...in addition, civs with close relations can try to influence their idealogies...civics...on other civs...

And, civs will go to war against you because of your idealogies, just like SMAC...looks like Vietnam in Civ 4 is a possibility...
