How will the diplomacy be in Civ 4? I am thinking about trade embargos, alliances etc etc. Will it be more complex and better than in the last version? For example, will the AI opponent realize when he has no chance of winning? When he has nearly lost, will he perhaps be more reasonable and not reply with arrogant threats?

Diplomacy is the cornerstone of the game , Its where the AI meets the human player head to head in a sense.
Also shows how smart the AI is
But this is a area where much modding has been done in civilization games like CtP2 and Civ3. So whatever tweaking if any is needed we have many here who will be able to make changes

That is a good point and-given that the brokering of peace between two nations was in SMAC, it gave me some hope that other features of SMAC diplomacy would make their way into Civ4-including ability to base units in allied cities, forts and airfields; Protectorate/Vasselage agreements; Unit Trades. I also hope and pray that embargoes will actually mean something in Civ4, and that you can ask for-or give- a resource in trade, even if the other person already has it, but this would require a better modelling of resources and their use. I do believe, though, that religion, civics and AI personalities will all help to improve diplomacy to some degree-the only question is: HOW MUCH??
Anyway, fingers crossed!!
Yours,
Aussie_Lurker.
