http://www.sigames.com/fm/

This game is by the guys who did the origonal Championship Manager games(Eidos have kept that name though).

And this game is far superior to the now called Championship Manager game imho.

Anyway i've had it for a few days and i'm still suffering awe at the scope and detail of this game. The manual is very sparse on detail in specific and important area's.

So anyone here play this? And have any advice?

I tried the officail forums, but they have a mandatory sign-up policy(even to just browse them), which i never like seeing.

First Question:

Training - which is the best way to set it up? its a bit confusing with the tick boxes for the various coaches/physio's, and how those apply to the training regimes you've set for your players. I only get a report from my physio about how a certain player is doing in training - why from him as i have better skilled coaches that are training these players(i've ticked the boxes for them)?
As you can see this sounds very confusing and is just one small question that springs to mind as a starter.

Any FM2005 veterans on poly?

Yeah, training, along with a load of other "enhanced" features, is too in-depth to be any real fun once you know what to do, all this extra depth does it create more clicks.

I grabbed this training thing from some site linked from SI forums while i still played, heres a link so it doesnt fudge the forum width:

Just wait a few months and get FM2006 at this point . I've heard that they are simplifying training a bit, FWIW.

Hope so. I havent played CM properly in a long time, too much detail that just bores away time once youre used to it all.

BTW Winning Eleven 9 is out tomorrow i think in Japan (or "online") on PS2 though, have to wait to October for Xbox.

English Licenses will be included for the first time ever. But don't get too excited, only Arsenal and Chelsea are going to be licensed. Other new licenses include those for Rangers, Dynamo Kiev, Galatasaray and FC Porto. 2005/06 kits will be added for the clubs from La Liga and the Dutch Eredivisie. Real numbers and lettering is included for the licensed teams. Updated kits have been added for the unlicensed clubs.

Not a lot but theyll be a load of gameplay and AI tweaks.

Plus you can apply a patch anyway for all the licensed stuff, i have the PESFAn patch on my Xbox.

Video is hardly worth watching on there either.

Cheers Maq - i knew as i wrote my request that you'd get on the case

I've found over the course of playing LMA Manager2005 through eleven game years, that even as much as i loved the match engine and pure management style of it - it did suffer from not having the depth of stats that games like FM2005 have.
Also i'm pretty much the dominant force in world club football(sadly no option to manage national teams), my once lowly conferance team is now cleaning up in ALL compitions for the last two seasons, so i guess i've beaten the game
Still i was playing for over six months(real life time), and it was a fun journey - i just need more challange

But as you say FM2005 has so much clicking to do when you want to delve deeper into the game - it is very daunting.

I might have to bite the bullet and sign-up to the FM2005 forums i guess, they seems the best place to get the detailed answers i'm going to need.

Still as a note of interest i'm playing this game on slightly under the minimum req(a PIII 566 128MB - instead of a PIII600 128MB), so have chosen just seven leagues to simulate accurately, the complete English leagues from conference north+south up and the welsh premier league(kinda a grand title for what it is ).

I'm playing Newport County in the Conferance south and my aim is to reach the premiership! So understanding how training works is going to be important, especialy as i like to home-grow my talent.

Cheers again - looking at that download i can already see a cunning plan forming

Yeah its worth registering, it adds a lot to your own experiences too, especially reading the lower league managers forum stories. Makes me want to play the game and get frustrated with it all over again.

they don't like hotmail email accounts.......oh well, maybe i'll try my yahoo one later(maybe if their 'contact us' email link worked i could find a way around there 'security' measures to stop i guess flame war junkies?).

Anyway i'm not that bothered now as i'm seeming to get the hang of it.
I've won the last 3 games in a row so i must be doing something right?

Still my team still have big up+down days when it comes to training and what their stats are doing.
Using Maqs chart thing - i worked out that 'Overload Attack' gives more overall stat points than any other training method, but has its weakness's.

I don't think it is just because of the training i've given my players(split up into 'Defence'/'Attack'(for Defenders+key strikers) and 'FirstTeam' for midfield+overall training), as the default training you start with also gives me up+down stat changes.

So whats your prefered method of training? Do you swap players between training routines(for example in my case betwen say 'Attacking' + 'First team') to round out thier skills? In theory this sounds good, but i'm new to this

Lose 30 kilos (of popups)

I left them on the same training all season, except in pre-season, definitely doesnt mean this is the best way of course, i just couldnt be bothered to micromanage it, but also not put it into the hands of my assistant.

"Youth", "GK", "DF", "DMF", "AMF", and "FW" were all the seperate training regimes I had, and then "pre-season". I think youll know what they all stand for. And something like no more than 2 regimes per coach. Of course i was playing as Spurs so i probably had more coaches to spread aorund.

I had a quick scan over the forum a while ago, seems like the mental stats have become really important in the latest patch. I remember initially physical stats were the most important.

Ah that might explain it - i have a decent ammount(and quality) of coaches(4+1 Assistant manager) for Conference south league, but they are all doing 7 regimes each! I see i might need to look at that.
Also my physio is basicaly rated 1 in everything except 'physio' which is 20, and i'm nervous about assigning him any training - just in case his poor stats undo the work of my other coaches. So i leave him un-assigned - will it effect my teams injuries do you think?

On a different topic i did a nasty sneaky cheat thing(the get lots of money from chelsea for rubbish player cheat), which i feel bad about.
The good part is that even though i got £20mill in my clubs accounts - i can do little with it as even cr*p players(but slightly better than my level) don't want to come to Newport.
I got all my new players(seven in total) for the grand sum of 3K, most were free transfers. Still it's nice feeling rich - even if i cant use it yet

I think if you assign them to less they do better, but i dont know the exact limits, like if you can assign them to 2 schedules and still get maximum effect or it deteriorates gradually the more jobs you give them.

I never assigned the physios and didnt see any ill-effects.

If only he had asked - still i did post this before he did his CM5 thread.

Anyway i'm going to bore Maq(and anyone else) silly with some training stats

So i'm using three main training regimes(with two coaches assinged to each)+ one for my goalie. The training regimes are broken into morning/afternoon/evening sessions.

First Team - i use this for mostly my midfield players, but i put others in it from time to time.

Sun: rest all day
Mon: 5-a-side(large pitch)/Overloading(Atk)/Setpiece(Atk)
Tue: Closing down sesion/Overloading(Def)/Setpiece(Def)
Wed: 5-a-side(large pitch)/Pig In Middle/Technique
Thr: Overloading(Atk)/Crosses/Sprints
Fri: 5 a-side(large pitch)/Overloading(Atk)/Training match
Sat: rest all day

Defending - i use this for all my defenders, but think i might put some of my defensive midfielders in from time to time?

Sun: rest all day
Mon: 5 a-side(large pitch)/Overloading(Def)/Setpiece(Def)
Tue: Heading/Overloading(Def)/Tactical training
Wed: 5 a-side(large pitch)/Technique/Pig In Middle
Thr: Setpieces(Def)/Overloading(Def)/Weight training
Fri: 5 a-side(large pitch)/Overloading(def)/Training match
Sat: rest all day

Attacking - Forwards and strikers and maybe an attacking midfielder sometimes?

Sun: rest all day
Mon: 5 a-side(large pitch)/Overloading(Atk)/Setpieces(Atk)
Tue: Crosses/Overlaoding(Atk)/Setpieces(Atk)
Wed: Sprints/Overloading(Atk)/Setpieces(Atk)
Thr: Shooting/Technique/Weight training
Fri: Clossing down session/Heading/Shooting
Sat: rest all day

I used that chart thing you linked to - so i've tried to use the skills that increase stats the most. Still it's all a bit like fumbling in the dark.............so how does it look?

The thing is with games like this its worth the effort to get a decent training set-up, especialy in the lower leagues were your training and tactics make all the diference.

I'm having a good cup run(in two at the momment), and i've found time to give everyone atleast a few games, so my players are all happy(except one stubborn git who is a good player, but *****es about where i play him all the time!) with superb morale.

In 12 games i've only lost 1 but have 5 draws, which is keeping me out the top three spots in my league(conference south).

I like sports sim games, but this is ridiculous.

Personally, I'd enjoy a football sim game where you get to choose what your guys eat. That way I could build up like a 500lb lineman. Unfortunately, he'd probably die in the first game.

Fortunately what CoT is describing only needs to be done once in all the game (maybe tweaked when you get better/more coaches), its the rest of the game that contains some insane MM.

Well this thread broke me down CoT so i might start a game later, gonna try and patch it first. Have you patched to the latest?

yeah i think so - it now says version 5.0.2 under the title credits.
Its quite fun in the conference south - i had little expectation to live up to, and am looking forward to the climb to the premiership (that should keep me busy for a long while)

And its the levels of MM that i like in this kind of game - its a very different beast form LMA manager2005 for example, which for a console game offers a very good amount of depth in the same sort of way the games like FM2005 do.

Compared to LMA manager, FM2005 just needs more attention from the player, which if your willing to invest brings its own rewards. It may still not have a console-esque sexy match engine, but its got the tension in bucket loads.

Shouting and *****ing at my little orange circles as they scoot around the pitch is surprisingly more fun than it sounds. I think i need a whole new(better) team before i'll feel happy with their game

Still i atleast have a couple of 'star' players that have been keeping us up in the top part of the league. My main match winner is a young SC i got from swansea(he was a reserve player there). He may cost me nearly more than the rest of my team a week in wages, but he's worth every penny(at £1000 pw). Hes currently on played 14 games/scored 21 goals

Oh yeah Maq - at game setup i chose to not use real players, but opted for player stats to be visable. When i've got a better handle on the game i'll hide the player stats, but i like to use non-real player names(i've noticed that the players actualy do stay at the clubs - just under different names; eg i've found Ryan Giggs playing for ManU,a 30 something AML - he's just called Paul jones now!).

Well i started a new game with Conference North outfit Droylsden, theyre crap, but have to say im enjoying the game again.

We started with one coach and a physio, not even an assistant and no transfer fee to spend, although i reckon it makes little difference between spending 0K and 10K signings, you still just cherry pick any rejects from higher clubs.

Im way down the league 15 i think after 30 games but yet i can still make the playoffs, apart from Nuneaton, anyone can beat anyone. Playing an attacking 3-4-3, its getting ripped apart by fast fowards, which doesnt surprise me since i have no DMC's at the club, the defenders keep getting injured and my midfielders are all creative, but i have the second highest goals for in the league at least.

End of this season ill overhaul my squad to something with DMC or three in the team.

you know you'll have fun turning that bunch of misfits into a worthwhile team what made you pick them to manage? (i chose Newport as they were the lowest placed welsh side with the option to take to the premiership)

i found at first it was tricky to find players/coaches to join my setup - then i sussed out using the filters in the 'search' menu, which is a very powerfull feature(better than in the old CM i think), and once i had worked out how to find the free transfers/out of contract people etc, i managed to streangthen my team for the coming season.

I found three very good coaches for free(i sacked my starting Assistant Manager and re-negotiated with one of these new coaches to take over the role) overall i spent around £5000 on 7 new decent personel

And i'm surprised you've played so many games already!

Maybe its the speed of my pc? Do you use fast results in your matches? - i like to keep things at an even pace so i can watch the match and identify weaknes's.

It usually takes me about 3hrs to just play through about 4 games(with all the messages, checking next opposition and tailoring new tactics etc, dealing with players problems, scouting for a decent bargin on the market etc).

But my PC does grind and help slow the pace down to give me time to do all this, which i find helps me get a better performance out my team in the long run, or seems to?

Anyway good to see your having a go from the dregs of the football league - its a very rewarding way to play(if it goes well )

Their name just sounded good, and theyre in the Northern league, thats all. Had i known they were relegation favourites i might have chosen another team, but i didnt want to reload.

The board is delighted with my performace anyway, so i must be doing alright.

I found it tricky too. I could only sign (afford) "unknown" unemployed coaches, you take what you can get.

One thing i definitely will change this pre-season, ill be signing and loaning plenty more players, especially DC and DMC. I tried to sign a few at the start but none were having it. I can only offer £400 a week maximum.

Im using 3/4 commentary, 3/4 key highlights most of the time.

Not studying every opponent, just tweaking my tactic each time i concede or let in a really good chance, which is a dodgy way to work, but ive definitely improved my 3-4-3 (terrible choice formation for a non-league team BTW, too complicated). No doubt i couldve been more meticulous but i enjoy more the quick trial and error.

Also theres only so much i can do with tactics, theres just some games youre bound to lose.

Ive patched to 5.0.5, seems to be a lot more bookings and reds, even for fair players. Hate the talking back to referee bookings.

Yep i learn't a little too late about the handy loanings from higher leagues - and i've also learn't to give up on a player who says he doesn't want to come to my club, even when his club are happy to negociate.

in game i untick the replay box on goals scored and run the commentary at 2/4 and highlights at 3/4.

Amen to that! i had one game where even after i had selected 'easy' tackling i ended the game with one red and 5 yellow cards. Still i think it is a particular ref, Derik Fox i think his name is - he seems to hate my team and book us out the game

Still the good news is that after one season under my management, Newport county(the Exiles) are conference south champions and FAW cup holders

My board of directors were seen partying+celebrating with fans outside the grounds!

Still i'm not confident i have the strength in depth to achieve a promotion next season in the conference, i suspect i might need a season or two of squad building to take the next step up.

And i don't think i've got the hang of press statements yet - i've gone from mystarting 10 rateing in both handling the press+ professionalism to about 7 in each .......so i have pleanty of aspects to work on untill Newport lift the European cup

I eventually finished 11th, overhauled my tactics to a custom 4-4-2 five games from the end of season, didnt concede a goal and won 3

I think the trick is, as in real life, to be as dull as possible. Plenty of words whilst saying nothing, that kind of thing.

my startup formation was 4-4-2 - i changed it to an attacking version with emphersis on wind play when i was happy i had strong enough wingers for the job, still even my reserve players seemed to handle it ok.

ah - thats the problem then, i entered into a slanging match once or twice with a couple of managers. I also made the mistake of 'praiseing' some of my players too much(well i was told i did it too much, if three/four times can be too much?!). I couldn't help it if i had some guys who turned in 10 rated performances fairly often?

After winning £100,000 for the FAW cup, i feel a bit cheap over my £20,000,000 cheat of chelsea. I think i may have to replay the season without it - it might not have done me much good so far, but after i go up a few leagues i'll have too big an advantage. I could just jump ships to another lowly club at some point?

Anyway its a fun game, and i still have to work out the best training regime.

because they have more money than sense? or maybe i cheated............i was playing in conference south so i decided to give me some chance of a glory run, i could use the money. As i found out it doesn't solve all your problems, reputation of your club counts for alot when trying to attract players. So i've not been able to buy ryan giggs for example, and about the best player i have bought was a swansea youth striker for £5000. Still its nice being told i have a much bigger wage budget than i'll be able to use in a long time
