Most of the Germanic tribes came out of the steppes, though, like the Huns and whatnot, no? The Finns perhaps later than most, but I rather thought almost all of France/Germany/Scandinavia (Northern Europe) came from the same general area/ethnic background... as opposed to Roman/Greek heritage, which is very different (Phoenician, from what I recall, is the common heritage there)...
Anywho, after using Google, the Normans (William the Conqueror) were Norsemen - men from the north, who in AD 911 moved to Normandy and 'suggested' the French King let them settle (which he did, subject to him being their lord). They then took control and set up the entire Feudal system essentially ...
