My letter to Jack Thompson (crusader against video game violence) Support Apolyton, buy Call to Power 2

quote:
Hi John,

or Jack, or whatever you call yourself... honestly, I don't understand why guys named John insist on calling themselves Jack. I think Jackoff or Jerkoff would be a more appropriate way of referring to yourself.

I don't quite know what to make of you. You could be one of a few things. You could be an honest critic of video game violence and sex. You could really believe (falsely) that video game violence is somehow detrimental to kids. I'll make a few points to address your ignorant opinions if this is the case.

You, and people of your ilk, act is if the world (or America for that matter) was a peaceful land of bliss, devoid of violence before the introduction of violent video games to our society. I'm not sure how aware of history you are, but let's review a few things about history pre-1990 (maybe late 80's, around the time violent games started to gain popularity).

WW2 - Hitler, an upstanding member of German society. A wonderful, peaceful man with political aspirations... until he played Grand Theft Auto, right? The Japanese... a peace-loving people simply seeking to spread their love across East Asia and the Pacific... until they played Killer 7, right? Joseph Stalin... a humble, gentle man corrupted by Doom.

Let's fast forward to Vietnam. The North Vietnamese seek to invade the South and establish a society where everyone is forced to play violent video games, right? Or we could look at America. The country that murdered over 3 million people during that conflict. LBJ and Westmoreland were both avid PC games as I recall.

I think I'll stop there with the historical comparisons. I really don't need to illustrate how ridiculous your charges are. The facts simply are not on your side. There has not been one single death in the World that can be directly attributed to violent video games. Period. Columbine? Perhaps the problem might not be Marilyn Manson or violent games, but the fact that those kids were constantly being bullied. And by all means, let's not even talk about how those kids had easy access to LEGALLY PURCHASED firearms. God forbid we piss off the NRA and other conservatwits by suggesting guns may be bad things.

And let's talk about sex, baby. Let's talk about Hot Coffee. OOOH... pixelated, animated characters making whoopie! Are you so sexually repressed that you are bothered by this? I can understand Hillary Clinton. I mean, she's so sexually repressed, her husband had to get blown by a fat intern because he was so desperate. I'm not sure if you are married or not... but if you are, I suspect your wife is so ugly, ****ing her must be so repulsive that thinking of other women just doesn't do it for you anymore. Or are you one of these limp-dicked Cialas/Viagra users? Got the need to pop pills to get it up? Do you need Enzyte like Bob? Do you need to compensate for that little nub you call a penis? Huh? So small that pencil erasers monsterously dwarf that amoeba sized ****er?

But you know what I think? I don't think you really believe the whole violent video games is bad thing. You seem to be a (relatively) educated man. Personally, I think you are just like all these politicians. You see an opprotunity to inject yourself into a public discussion. You are a pathetic, insignificant scumbag lawyer. But alas, you can make a name for yourself by taking on this crusade. I'm not sure of your political affiliation. But I would normally expect this from a conservative. You know, the people who hate freedom and want to control every aspect of our lives. The people that want people to never have sex unless they're making babies. The people that want to raise young people to be completely ignorant of sex by teaching... no... training them in abstinence only programs.

But what is very strange is that the most outspoken critics of Rockstar and Grand Theft Auto are Democrats. I'm perplexed! Democrats are supposed to be the good guys. They're supposed to be the people who protect us from the hordes of ignorant puritanical zealots. But after losing to a complete boob like Bush in the last two elections has really traumatized the Democrats. Hillary Clinton and Joe Lieberman think that if they act more like Republicans, people will vote for them. The same with Chuck Schumer and Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich.

I suspect you and the Democrats are nothing more than attention-seeking whores. You obviously can't cut it chasing ambulances so you resort to this ****.

I pity you and your pathetic attempts. 50 years ago, old people were *****ing about rock and roll. And they couldn't stop the inevitable rise of rock and roll.

And just like those angry, pathetic crybabies; you and your ilk will be unable to stop the rising popularity of violent video games. This is one case where the free market is a beautiful thing. People under 40 love playing these games. And they will only continue to get edgier, more violent, and more offensive.

So you know what? If you don't like these games, don't buy them. Don't play them. But don't try to **** it up for everyone else. I know some people have been sending you death threats, but I won't do that. I don't wish death on you (although I wouldn't cry if you suffered severe bodily harm). Just knowing that every time I see a commercial for a more violent and sexually explicit game, you'll be shitting bricks. Crying like a little *****.

The real outrage of this entire situation is that you and our wonderful politicians are ignoring the real causes of violence. Your efforts in the courts are wasting taxpayer money and time. Every dollar wasted in your crusade is a dollar that could be better spent improving our "every child left behind" education system. Or worse, depriving an Iraqi child of a chance at a decent life. Or depriving the millions of Africans suffering from AIDS a chance at life.

So please... as Americans die in Iraq for Bush's war, as Africans die of AIDS or starvation, as underprivilaged kids in America suffer from a system that doesn't give a **** about them; I feel comforted in knowing that you are protecting the youth of America from a game.

Now go **** yourself you stupid piece of ****.

GG THX

I like the sentiment but I worry that he may just screw it up and put it in the bin with the 'insults'.

I have wiped out billions of people in my time using an array of weaponry from the bow and arrow to the singularity planetbuster. Has it done me any harm? Has it turned me into a megalomaniacal monster? Actually, don't answer those

I happen to believe violent games should be kept away from small children, and are marginally responsible for violence amongst other far more important causes.

That said, it is a parent's job to regulate this, not the law's.

Maybe you should mention that in the last 10 years, as the "violence" of videogames hyas risen, the crime rate, specially the murder rate, has fallen, and dramatically, ni many areas, in some places 70% or more.

Maybe he prefers kids shooting real kids, as opposed to virtual aliens or some ****.

I dunno, I went to this website where the admin has been emailing him back and forth and he seems to be one of these guys that has to have the last word. http://www.vgcats.com/jack.php

I suspect the length of my message may make him curious.

But it's likely he'll just pitch it.

Oh well, if he's too chickenshit to even read my rant, more power to me.

Sava, you've done amazingly well at completely wasting an opportunity. You argumentation is for the most part solid and you raise valid points against his criticism. However, your excessive and unnecessary insults will make him not take you seriously, which he'll be quite right to do.

People will typically read all kind of criticism that is written in an insult free way. Criticism with insult and rudeness is usually a mark of the author's inability to properly express himself otherwise.

You could have done so much better.

Anyway, video games do cause some problems. My wife's aunt is a nurse, and one of the kids she treated for a gunshot wound said he was surprised being shot hurt so much. It wasn't like in the video games.

Ahh... a person who is so moronic to be surprised at being hurt when shot would also do something equally moronic without video games, under the influence of a movie, song or anything else.

And not like in the movies or on TV...

And I agree... it should be up to the parents to say what is allowable, not the government. If some parents want to keep their kids from it, that's great, their choice.

It is a mistake to confuse Jack Thompsons position with that of Hilary Clinton, Joe Lieberman, et al.

Thomson wants to sue game makers whenever some violent event happens.
Moderates want to see the ESRB code enforced, see parents educated about it and follow it, and shame those who make junk culture.

Thomson attributes causality for specific acts of violence to video games.
Moderates point to scientific studies that indicate that certain video games are associated with a generally increased level of aggressiveness.

Moderates like Hillary have a broader view of the family in America, one that recognizes that "it takes a village" that parents need community AND culture thats supportive. Thompson seems to be just an ambulance chaser, with no larger agenda.

Most people under 40 dont love playing them, as witness the slowdown of the console gaming market. Hardly any females love playing them, and thats half of the under 40's right there. Comparing this to rock and roll is just silly.

Oh, and the best selling PC game is The Sims, and the consoles rely on sports games, racing games, and such new non-violent games as Katamari Damaci.

I dislike anti-gaming types who identify ALL gaming with violent gaming, in defiance of the facts. I see you are one of those.

I play civ as a peaceful perfectionist.

Civ2 is a game with broad historical themes. You can compare its violence to a shooter if you wish. You might as well call in sexually explicit as well, since it models population growth.

Ive never played Civ3 - does that have more explicit "genocide" than Civ2?
