"Powered by GameSpy" Support Apolyton, buy GURPS/ Alpha Centauri

I saw "Powered by GameSpy" on the back of several game boxes. Does anybody know what it means? It sounds... ominous.

Most games still have in game browsers, though for some games it is better to use an external browser anyway. Gamespy used to be really useful.........I guess it has just irritated people a lot in recent times.

They have a reputation problem I think ... that's probably irrecoverable, without some serious work on their part that they're not interested in doing (as they're something of a monopoly ... there's nobody else I can think of that offers their service, certainly not at that high of a level). Yet another proof of the evilness of monopolies

and the prog itself uses up resources as well... and on my crap computer I need all the resources I can get

There's also the All-seeing Eye. It's similar to gamespy

There are plenty of good games gamespy used to be the main browser for. Still, there are usually alternatives sans spyware you can check out.

It means that gamespy will run a lobby for the game, and you can either use gamespy arcade or ingame lobby(which goes to gamespy's arcade without having to dl it/install it/run it) to play multiplayer.

hmm, I've always wondered about that. I tried to avoid crap like that.

If I want to play multiplayer, I usually click the multiplayer tab in games. does that use gamespy?

I'm mainly talking about games such as Civ3 and Neverwinter Nights.
