If you don't want to dual boot, but just want to try Linux (which I suggest):

There's Beatrix, Knoppix, and now a Gentoo Fizzlewizzle LiveCD.

For actual installs, Ubuntu's very nice for that sort of thing.

Suffering from ads?

Debian is pretty easy to install these days, and mighty small.

Kaak,

I want to warn you about the road you are contemplating going down.

Right now, you got the tan, you got the build, you got the six pack. The hoes can't get enough of you.

BUT I AM WARNING YOU

You go down the path of Linux and you will lose all those things. Do you really want that dogg????

Lose 30 kilos (of popups)

Kaak,

Depends on what you would like to do. Knoppix LiveCD is always a good first choice. You can get your toes wet without going through installation and configuration. Gentoo can be installed and tuned to a small footprint, but that involves a lot of tweaking and requires a good level of skills. Ubuntu is probably the best choice because the installation is almost transparent.

che,

Debian itself isn't exactly easy to install. However there are a whole host of other distros that are based on Debian, including Knoppix and Ubuntu.

Kaak, just go with Red Hat Fedora. It's the most widely used in business so is the most practical for your needs.

I honestly can't recommend Fedora. While Anaconda is a very slick installer, the rest of Fedora is such a pain and a bloat to tweak.

Ubuntu, on the other hand, is fast, friendly, and much easier to learn and tweak.

Gentoo's the best for learning and tweaking, but it also requires the most time investment, and a willingness to accept mistakes and goofs. The Gentoo fizzlewizzle LiveCD, on the other hand, is a good way to try out a full system.

I'd say go for a Ubuntu system . They'll even ship you the CDs if you don't have the bandwidth to download them ( and I recieved my request of 20 packs of 2 cds each , even though I live in India ) .

Currently , I'm posting this from a LiveCD of Ubuntu , as my hard disk got fried to do a malfunctioning UPS ( or maybe just that its time had come ) . And nobody can tell the difference - my use of the PC has not significantly been affected ( I have two hard disks , and one which did not get fried has some useful data , so I just mount it and continue ) ( I do have a GB of DDR RAM , dual channel , so that might help a bit ) .

It depends on what you need. If you want a system that is small and you can tweak all you want, Fedora is not it. On the other hand, if you want a distro with a bunch of common applications and daemons so you can set something up quickly with a minimal of effort, Fedora is quite good. Same thing with SuSE really, and I presume Mandriva (sp?) also.

I'd still go with RedHat.

It's the mainstay.

Others like Gentoo and Ubuntu will be the flavor of the month, but in business, it's all RedHat. Unless you're in Europe, where it's Suse.

However, FREEBSD uber ALLES!!!!!!!!

Gentoo and Ubuntu are hardly "flavor of the month", unless by month you mean "almost 4 years" in the case of Gentoo.
