promotion question Support Apolyton, buy Civilization III: Complete

If one utilizes enough unit fodder and saves his best unit to attack last...might take awhile but

could one get all the promtions?

It would be more expensive to use your weak units first. The best strategy in the long run is to use the strongest units first. It's mathematically provable. The cannon fodder strategy only works in situations where the units are substantially cheaper to build and/or maintain, which is generally not the case in Civ.

Exactly - think about it, your unit with several promotions is more powerful. Now, do you really want to use it on a very weak enemy unit, and simply waste some units as cannon fodder, just to get that promotion? Probably not. It would be wise not to risk experienced units too much, but generally, it's better to use your strongest units first.

I suppose you wouldnt want to use your experienced units on suicide missions, but what good would an experienced unit be if he just sat around looking pretty?

My recollection is that units are more likely to get promoted in a difficult fight (however that is defined). Makes manipulation of events for the sake of promotions problematic.

I have no objection to this at all! Less certainty -- more randomness/mystery/role-playing!

units shouldnt survive upgrade
promotion should be given to units surviving "heroic" battles, not just winning battles against weak players (pc) or endlessly being used to finish off almost-dead units (human)

I sure hope they do, otherwise there's not much point in it since a unit often only get into a few fights before it's time to upgrade the unit (I guess)

so what would you do if you spent all your cannon fodder to promote your unit, you are happy, and he dies the next turn since he was the only unit left because all the cannon fodder was gone?

I wonder if promotional bonuses are stackable? Like you could get city raider bonus and forest bonus on one unit...

Also I wonder would you be able to see whether if your enemy's unit have a bonus or not? Personally I prefer it that you cannot see their bonus unless you had a sucessful spy action or whatever they plan to implement into the game.

Problematic. What happens if we go too far? Will we have some kind of super-unit? I don't like it, it's not civ.

I prefer it that you can see the skills of your enemy.
IMHO, this spy thing could work if we have some kind of (optional, please! ) micro-management on warfare. I've read something about MM being a choice in public works, but nothing about combat or something like that.

That is easily addressed by making each successive promotion harder to get. Your first promotion might come after the first victory, the second promotion after the third victory, the third promotion after the seventh victory, the fourth after the 15th victory, etc. ad infinitum. It would be effectively possible for a unit to get every single promotion under that scheme, as it would have to win something like a trillion battles to get all 40. I'd be surprised if they weren't already doing something like this.

This is still possibly problematic, if promotions are preserved with upgrades. A unit that's been upgraded from a 4000 BC warrior shouldn't be invincible in 2000 AD. Perhaps upgrades should lead to "demotions"?
