I have several paintings from an illustrator whom after having heard tales of some goiungs on at The Wild Boar, painted this rendition. Our Great Khan was somehow led to be featured as receiving ideas from some Horde members interested in a game of Backgammon..which will be one of many games of chance and skill we will pass the hours by with.

I have no idea whom would be asking one of our ladies to warm his knees as we most certainly almsot never allow such conduct with our bevy of beautiful maiden servants

I could not resist having something more to offer than food and drink, for fellowship not only plays out on the battlefield but in the games of chance area.

Here we see a game of skittles:

Skittles is a majestic game in which the alley is around 21 feet, the bomb-shaped pins are 14 1/2 inches high, 6 1/2 inches across the middle (3 inches diameter at either end) and weigh 9 pounds. The discus-shaped cheese, too, is enormous varying from 8 1/2 to 12 inches in diameter and weighing between nine and twelve pounds but none-the-less, the cheeses are thrown in order that they hit the skittles directly without touching the floor first.

Moving along to one we all will hoot and holler over known as Billiards or from its origin of France where it was known as Carambole

It appears that the English had amalgamated the potting aspect from their 'Winning Game' with the carom to come up with the version described. It also seems that the concept of the 'break' had still not arrived - the comment about seven points in one stroke indicates this plus sixteen points is surely too few for a game allowing a run of several strokes in a row.

Textbooks give us a confusing and contradictory series of descriptions as to the games being played at this time - probably because what was around was indeed confusing. This game was called 'The Winning Carambole game' in some books and there was also 'the Losing Carambole game' and naturally enough the 'Winning & Losing Carambole game'. In this, 2 points were scored for potting the opponent's white, or going in-off it; 3 points were added for either potting or going in-off the red; 2 points were scored for a Cannon. A player was penalised 1 point for a complete miss and 3 points for missing and going straight into a pocket.

In conclusion, it seems that all combinations of the three concepts were played and that trend continued with the advent of the fourth important concept, the 'break'.

Quoits Support Apolyton, buy Civilization 2

Quoits has is related to another early pub game, the throwing of horseshoes at a pin in the ground. Some theories have it that Quoits developed from Horseshoe pitching as a formalised version of the sport. Horseshoe pitching is still played today, notably in certain regions of the USA, the rules being similar to those of the Northern Quoits game outlined below. The theory espoused by Peter Brown, President of the National Quoits Association is just the opposite. A quoit in ancient times was synonymous with a discus, and so he thinks that Quoits and discus are one and the same thing and that Quoits was therefore one of the sports played at the first Greek Olympiad. He also suggests that the Greeks passed on Quoits, a weapon of war, to the Romans who also brought the game to Britain and that the origins may go back even further to the Minoan empire c.2000B.C. where the boy king of Knossos apparently used the discus/quoit to cull escaping slaves. Horseshoe pitching in this case came about as a poor-man's version of Quoits using left-over horseshoes instead of the real thing.

Whatever the origin, the game was certainly being played in England early in the second millennium in roughly the form known today wherein metal rings are thrown up and down a pitch with target pins at either end embedded in areas of soft clay. It seems to have been associated with agricultural and working class people, in particular with the mining industry. Quoits of this era generally were made from poor-quality left over metal from mine forges and this is why main areas of quoit playing seem to have centred around mining communities.

The Long game has a long pedigree and has its stake flush to the clay, which presents an interesting dilemma for historians - did the other games derive from it and then evolve the pin out of the clay or did they develop separately or prior to the long game?
