	Lions+Elephants in N.America!!! Got spare money?

its not april the 1st, so i guess this must be serious. Anyway even though i agree that we should use our scientific knowledge to come up with decent solutions to various problems, i think we should be carefull with these kind of experiments.
I would have thought that after the experience of the grey squirel in the uk and cane toads in australia etc, our boffins would have realised the potential disaster non-native speices can pose in a particular enviroment.

So i'm caustious about the actual good this will do - why not use more native speices(like wolves/cougars etc)?

I'm sceptical, but I would be interested to see their research. At least if it is introduced megafauna screwing things up we have a decent chance of recapturing them. Toads and squirrels are unexterminatable, but elephants kinda stand out.

Isn't the midwest a little chilly in the winter for lions and elephants?
Aren't midwesterners actually much better armed than Africans? I imagine the militiamen would have a field day given the chance to bag some really big game.

Jeez. What do people expect when posing for pictures with a tiger. Or performing shows in Las Vegas with a bunch of them for that matter.

I'm sorry, I can't muster much sympathy. A pet peeve of mine is that this is a case that the media will likely describe as "a tragedy". We've had some cases here where people fell to their death after balancing on escalator railings, paragliding in tow of a car etc. Instantly reported as tragedies. If people behave that recklessly, it's hardly a tragedy IMO.

We don't need African wildlife to get a thrill around here. This summer already we've seen a bear across the street and a mountain lion two blocks from my house. The local coyotes have been quiet recently, but I expect them back in the fall. The fox population is riding high while skunks seem to be in decline. There are several mule deer in my yard most nights. Thankfully I live in the city, a friend of mine who lives about 20 minutes away in the mountains occasionally has bears try to break into his house (once successfully), and really has to be on the lookout for mountain lions at all times.
