Looking for the land of Sumer you have traveled many miles and many months. Across deserts you made your way with a trade caravan. Through gradually greener lands you found work as a shepherd, then a farmer. Dumuzi has returned to the underworld and now is the time of his sister Geshtinanna. Now it is fall. The harvest is in and you bring its fruit to a city on the banks of the Tigris.
The sounds and smells of the city rise up to meet you as you pull your overloaded cart through the crowd. Herdsmen lead their livestock through the streets. A new trader hawking his wares seems to be in your face at every step. In this city it seems that all is for trade or sale. Barges bring in food, animals, textiles, spices, slave, and free man. At last, a hole opens in the throng of people ahead of you. Now you can make some headway to the market. With your faith in man's decency renewed, you put your head down, "thank you - excuse me it's been a long day", and begin to pull your...
The temple's gaurd pushes you out of the way. Your now underloaded cart is left upside down. Weeks of back breaking work is marched into the stone road as the procession turns the corner and heads to the fields to give thanks for this year's harvest.
The pains of travel, and fruitless (literally fruitless) toil settle deep in your bones. Your muscles fail you as you try to stand. Then an arm dressed in silks, with a hand whose fingers ring with cymbals reaches for you. "Welcome. Do come in." Not sure if you were kicked by a donkey, or spent too much time in the sun, you find yourself limping into a dark, cool building. Dreaming or not you'd be a fool to resist.
"Welcome to Ninkasi's Shrine - a place that satisfies the soul. I am Avedenki, handmaiden of Ninkasi, daughter of Enki. Let me know how I can be of service. Rest on these pillows. Let your tensions rise as the smoke of the hooka. Skrobninka, our barkeep, he likes to be called High Priest of the Ale, will be around with a fine beer for you shortly. There is also a tasty lamb on the spit. Stay as long as you like."
Your eyes grow accustomed to the dark. Lit by oil torches the room is a happy crush of people, music, and dancing. The air is thick with spiced smoke, perfumes, and that roast lamb. You have found Sumer.

Please stay awhile and enjoy the Nectar of Ninkasi - my favorite brew. Here is a pitcher to get you started. A plate of Lamb is coming.
Enjoy and give thanks to Enki for giving us his daughter Ninkasi and her many gifts!

Thanks Rubychaser for stepping up to the bar. This is exactly why I stepped down from diplo.
*A well oiled waiter wearing little more than a sling shot, and bracers walks up to E_T to get his requests.
Skrobninka High Priest of the Ale would like to know if anyone has seen his daughter, Avedenki. Since this crowd showed up I haven't seen her.

You get what you ask for here fine sir.
Fine beer? I am partial to the house brew, the Nectar of Ninkasi. This is a fine Sumerian beer. But we carry many knock-offs from the far corners of the world in as many shades as the color of our skins. What's your poison?

Beer. I have that.
Nice waitresses. I have those.
What is this "burger" that you speak of?
I can start you off with some skewered locusts, roasted in a nice honey sauce.
I have suckling pigs, pigeons, lamb, young calf, soups, and spicey stews, but none of this burger.
Enjoy your beer, someone will be by to take your order. Take your time.
