Coast Guard ends search for 31 Cubans lost in Florida Straits

MIAMI -- The Coast Guard suspended its search Wednesday for 31 Cubans believed thrown into the Straits of Florida when their boat capsized during an apparent smuggling run to the United States.

No victims or survivors were found other than three people rescued Sunday by a merchant vessel north of Matanzas, Cuba, according to the Coast Guard. Those survivors, two women and a man, were being treated in Cuba for burns and dehydration after five days at sea.

The survivors and Cuban border agents told U.S. officials that 14 people were initially able to cling to the hull of the overturned speedboat after it turned over Aug. 16. Eleven of those eventually drifted away, leaving the three who had life jackets.

The Coast Guard found an overturned 28-foot boat about 16 miles from the three survivors' location and towed it to Key West. The boat is registered in Florida but investigators were still trying to determine if it was the one used in the smuggling attempt.

Lt. Cmdr. Chris O'Neil, a Coast Guard spokesman, said at least 200 people are known to have died in attempts to reach the United States by sea in the past five years. Many more have likely perished whose identities are not known to U.S. officials.

"We need people to understand that migrant smuggling operations are every bit as dangerous as taking to the water in other overloaded or unseaworthy vessels,'' O'Neil said.

That would encourage ever more people to engage in ever more dangerous behavior, like those people who hijacked a ferry. The Florida Straights are treacherous waters, and have sunk many ships. The reason we send people back is to discourage them from trying, in order to save lives.

People are also dying to get to the U.S. from Mexico.

Interestingly enough, Cuba has it's own illegal immigration problem. Haitians who aren't stupid enough to try and get to the U.S. head to Cuba instead.

I've always wondered about the Haitians. Why swim to the US or Cuba when you can just walk to the Dominican Republic?

I don't see why the U.S. should be "helping" anyone flee Cuba any more than I think we should be "helping" anyone flee any country and come to the U.S. What, are we going to maintain fleets of vessels off the coast of every country in the world and help potential refugees get to the U.S.?

Well, to be fair, Cuba's the only country of origin in the world from which refugee status is guaranteed to anybody who successfully crosses the straight.

Good thing that doesn't have anything to do with the illegal migrant problem.

North Koreans too, but they really deserve it getting out of that hell hole. Of course the refugees have to dodge the Chinese police to get out (would be suicidal going across the DMZ) since the Chinese government is evil enough to have an agreement to send all the North Korean refugees it finds back to North Korea.

Not that same thing. That doesn't encourage more people to come, it helps those that do come keep from dying in the desert. The equivalent would be putting more ships in the Florida Straits to catch more people to send them back.
