To Be or Not To Be: SoZ is the Question Remove this text

As of this last turn we have found that we have ivory, on the tile 2222 of Apolyton.

The simple question is: Do we want to build it, and if so, how much do we want to put into the effort?

I am assuming everybody has Ivory. But that doesn't discourage me at all. Go balls to the wall with our third city. Basically just like I proposed back in my Wonders thread. Go nuts for it and it if doesn't work, we will be well on our way to the Great Pryamids.

as i said earlier: i just do not like great wonders...

though SoZ is very good!
but the others are building their first cities earlier than we are. so they are faster than we are. and when somebody builds SoZ everybody will switch to the pyramids!

and I just do not see the point of SoZ if we can build units instead!...

Puh, that's a difficult one. For me it's THE ONE Antike Great Wonder I would want, especially in SP but also in MP. But if we go for it, we have to go 100% for it, otherwise we will lose the race. In our case that means we would need to let our capital build it, because I don't see an extremely shield-rich spot for our second city. But our capital is so wonderfully set up as a settler-enkidu-factory, it would be a shame to abuse it for the SoZ.

Trying it only halfheartedly and probably switching to the Pyramids is imho no alternative. Those 400 Shields you can put to a far better use in the Military.

I'm with Donegal. Switch to pyramids if it doesn't work out with the Statue. we've made more units (I think?) than the teams that have settlers or grans already, so we might be in a minority of teams that have found their ivory.. if indeed everybody does have it.

We dont need to rush to settle the ivory.. Palace pre-build & no ivory will mask our intent from our neighbours. We should locate and settle the best production site we can, right away..

With poly being a settler pump and the second city being a worker pump, I can see how the fourth or fifth (at the most I guess) could be used for this...

I can also see that we might get a worker or two to spare to join the city, (how tight are we with the 50 turns WRT building the offensive force?).

@ Krill - I am sure we'll pick up masonry soon, and hopefully around the time we found our third city. We need masonry for the Pyramids as well, if memory serves..

well if the second is a worker pump, and Poly is a settler pump, I think the third city is perfect for building the SoZ. The workers can improve this citie's tiles, and then be added to it's pop, whilst we keep expanding with the settlers from Poly.

The only way to do a fair comparrison is to compare building the SoZ in that city, and that city building a barracks and then troops, and see what we have at the end of the NAP.

well SoZ costs 200 shields.. so that's minus 40 for a barracks = 160 shields to spend on swordsmend, so that's 5 and a bit vet swords.

I'd rather have 4 AC 20 turns after the wonder is finished, plus whatever other units it can make in that time, than 5 vet swords.

Nope, you still have to build the barracks to get the most out of the SoZ, so that point is null and void.

But here is something else for you to think about. Would you rather have those 4 AC after the war against CBR is near completion, or the extra 6 Swords and 2 Enks right at the start?

? I dont follow you. Sure, it's better to build the Soz with a barracks, but you've got 5 turns after it's complete to do that before the first AC appears.

Also, I am not aware of when we decided for sure to attack CBR, or the timescale.

First Post in this great team.

I agree with Poly-Akryll, Apolyton would be a great settler pump, 4 settlers with 4 Enkindus instead of the Wonder will give us much expansion power.

Our land is very good as I can see, much cows (4 !!!), approximately 2-3 luxurys and rivers...

I must read the history of the game a little bit but I guess to settle as much as possible to improve our production is the best way to attack our neighbours.

The more cities we have the more expansion and production.

What could our neighbours sent against our Enkindus?

With the Enkindu we have a great defence-potential and can settle even if we are in war.

It would also be useful if we would know if there is another civ on our country.

We will see...

Enter the AD-FREE zone

This is the confusion: Krill said that the comparison should be made between a city building the SoZ, and a city building barracks and then swords (at least, that's how I read it)

In the comparison that Moonbars made, he pointed out that the SoZ cost 200 and barracks cost 40, so building the SoZ instead of barracks is a 160 shield increase. Therefore, the resources spent building the SoZ could get you a barracks and 5 plus a bit swords.

But then Krill came back and said that the city building the SoZ should also build a barracks for a fair comparison. This is true, but he didn't actually say it initially. Hence the real comparision is between:

City 1: SoZ + barracks (240)
City 2: barracks (40) + 6 swords + [2 Enkidus - Krill]

But then you also have issues of timing and opportunity cost, etc etc, so the ultimate verdict depends more on what we intend to do with regards to expansion, defence and war.

Tired of ads?

More stuff to remember:

SoZ is great for shields. AC don't upgrade. They are GREAT for disbanding in low production/new cities later on in the game. In the long run, we will get far more out of SoZ than just a powerful ancient age army, but it will provide production later in the game.

Plus, if we build it, NO ONE ELSE CAN! (I hate fighting against AC)

Lose 30 kilos (of popups)

The biggest problem we have in this game, at the moment, is a lack of shields. We have a severe lack on bonus grasslands.

In the future, when we are in a different government, our core will be amazing, with all of the bonus food and hills.

But at the moment, we have limited shields available.

---

I have not simmed anything out far enough to see what is better for the short term, or the long term, with regards to the SoZ. I won't do it for a very simple reason. We don't know where the iron is, and the second settler that we build is going to head off to claim it.

---

The points that Donegeal bring up are valid, and are very good points, but the former only starts to take effect after they become obselete, which is against Muskets (but they are iffy against pikes, excluding defensive bombardment), but the latter is always a good point.

---

Yes, Adrian, that is what I meant, so thanks for wording it so much better. I edited your post to make it slightly more accurate, if that is OK with you. My apologies if it is not.

---

My personal view on this matter is that while we might just finish the SoZ before turn 80 (which is when the war against CBR would likely start), we would not get the AC for a while. And as we are going to be struggling to scrape together the shields to build the main army, I think it would be better for us if we built a barracks and troops than the SoZ.

And this all stems from the fact that the Enkidu does not upgrade to a sword...

With a 4-turn settler pump, I think we will have enough cities quick enough to set aside one city for SoZ.

i'd agree with Donegeal (OOC: what a lot of brits there are in this thread as well. Perhaps now is a good time to say "We Made The Ozzies Follow On") - we'll be able to expand pretty well. Ive seen games where the SoZ was a good move for a player, and a bad move for a player (he was ganged up on..) But in all games, it's been decisive. We cannot afford to let another tribe get it - we must at least make the effort.

With regard simming - location of iron, etc, is IMO not that important in a sim. what I tend to focus on more is what numbers we can expect - with those numbers, you can work out what army you can have if you have iron (total shields minus barrack cost / 30 or divide by 20 for archers.. etc etc.)

so far in the vote, it's 7 to 1 in favour of making an effort for the Soz, with 2 fence sitters.

Really? Even taking into account the amount of workers we have to build to add to the city, and taking into account the amount of worker turns we have to spend on improving the tiles around the city?

Look, the fact of the matter is this. If we go for SoZ we have to go for it full throttle, because we can't risk losing it. Because if we lose it, and go for the Pyramids, we end up spending another 200 shields on a wonder, instead of military units.

And if we go for it full throttle, we have to neglect our expansion, because we won't have our worker pump up and running it build the required workers.

This lack of expansion means that we won't be generating shields in those cities, because they won't even be founded, and so our military build up is delayed.

So we either go to war with less units, or we wait for the military forces to reach a high enough level before we attack. And if we do that, and CBR have MM, they have a very good chance of going round on gallies with settlers, or god forbid they end up reaching fued, and we have to attack defence 4 Swiss Mercs.

We are not suggesting either the settler pump at poly or the worker pump in city 2 be given-up-on. we are talking about the 3rd or 4th city. We'd be improving the tiles and adding workers to this city anyway, they are not being used any differently. all that is different is that city 3 must be built in a good shield location low corruption site, and city 4 or 5 must settle the ivory.

Also, I am unsure when we decided to definetly attack CBR, or the timetable that was agreed. I think we should build the SoZ, trade with CBR until this point, and invade once we have 2 or 3 AC to add to the army. We stand a chance at capturing, rather than them disbanding, if we have fast movers.

Suffering from ads?

Krill, I understand your point of view, and I agree to an extent. You are right that going full throttle for the Statue is the only way to go for it, and you are right that it will impair our expansion, but not to the degree you are worried about. 4 turns for a settler/EW pack. That is going to happen and it will happen quickly. The part that will slow up the expansion is adding the workers and consentrating more on the tiles around the SoZ city. Its just that I think the mid and long term benefits of the statue vastly out weigh the short term benefits of 6 Swordmen. By the time this monster city will be done, it is going to be pooping out an AC and either 2 1/2-3 EW or a Sword/EW every 5 turns. Thats 3-4 units every 5 turns for one city! In the Ancient age!

About the Ivory, I agree with Donegeal. Everybody has it, I believe.
Those Ancient Cavalry make a huge difference. We really should put some effort on that (it's easy to me say that, I'm not the guy of planning and calculations ). With the kind of brains we have here I’m sure we can win this race. It's all about good planning.
