* You know you're a geek when you find the concept of "GoogleOS" more arousing than "Hot turkish chicks".

I knew google was awesome from the first time I made a google search, but never would have guessed that google would turn out to be the MS slayer.

Got spare money?

Google is nice...

but what is so "awesome" about it?

It's just another search engine IMO... I mean, I type in the same **** in just about any search engine and the same results pop up. It's not as if Google finds some SECRET stuff on the internet that other search engines don't know about.

Put an end to popups!

Google has better quality results. And a much nicer search page. And fifty billion plugins and stuff that work with it.

Sun Microsystems currently has the technology to host entire applications like SAP for businesses. This means businesses have no hardware, software, etc., installed locally. They have thin client workstations that hook up to the server at Sun's hosting facilities.

If anyone can do it, it's Google.

Internet 2?

Help yourself to an AD-FREE life

What on earth would Google want its own OS for? Maintaining an OS gets expensive.

No, Google can afford to be OS agnostic, while broadening the scope of applications that it offers for all platforms. The fact that you can access Google's services from any OS is already causing Microsoft fits.

I think the point of this thread was to illustrate how you have completely missed the point.

My loyalty is to good products, not to a specific brand. MS and Google in fierce competition is awesome news, they'll one-up each other and we all benefit.

easy up, do you hear me talking about you anywhere in the thread? Apart from the title, which was, well less serious than what I posted.

And on topic, I think employee-offshoring is not necessarily competition that is good for the user. MS surely needs its employees to make quality products on time, so I don't know how it should help them and in turn us when the next Windows doesn't have the same standard anymore or takes even longer to finish.
Google's products OTOH always have been just "nice" but apart from their search technology, nothing is really essential.

THey tried a thin client before, and it bombed really bad. Now they're at it again.

THe past version, you still had to have a big computer onsite and a staff to take care of it.

Now, your office could be in Los Angeles, but you would connect to the application in Phoenix for example.

Tired of ads?

I agree that this is the future of computing. No more home computers, laptops, pdas, but a giant distributed computer where everyone has access to everywhere using generic interface devices.

That's odd.

Just not long ago you made the assertion that competition was bad while defending Microsoft's contemptible business actions.

I think you're getting confused by the fact that if we had a million different operating systems everyone would be far worse off.

There needs to be a standardized or very limited number of operating environments for programs, it's the nature of the beast with OSes. The more fragmented platforms you have, the far higher the development costs and the higher chance of having far more bugs.

That's why we need to pick a standard API and environment like .NET, and use them on whatever OS you want.

To understand the computer and software market you need to have both a business sense and computer knowledge, so it comes as no surprise that as someone who has neither, you and Aggie are always out to lunch in these threads.

It's not a matter of consistency, it's a different situation altogether -- operating systems involve an entire ecosystem of software that run on them, while competition between Google and Microsoft in areas like web services have no such dependant ecosystem.
