my mom almost died... because of my dad... Support Apolyton, buy Alpha Centauri

I love my father, but sometimes you just have to wonder about some people.

Before I can start with the story, some background information is necessary. My father had a stroke in 1986. He went through a lengthy recovery and eventually ended up going back to work, despite having moderately bad aphasia, speech difficulties, and being paralyzed on his right side. In addition to his stroke, he's had heart problems throughout his life. Because of the effects of his stroke, sometimes he doesn't think about his actions quite thoroughly. Which normally isn't a problem, and sometimes makes for some funny family moments.

About two years ago, my father was diagnosed with congestive heart failure. About 7 months ago he had an afribrulation (sp?) and had to have a pacemaker put in. In July while he was driving by himself, his pacemaker went off to correct his heart and he blacked out for a few seconds. Luckily he was stopped at a stop sign at the time. But since his "incident" he has been banned from driving. This has been frustrating for him because my father values his independence and doesn't like being taken care of.

At a recent doctor's visit, the doc said it was okay for him to take short car trips... to run errands, etc. That really brightened his mood and raised his spirits.

So yesterday, he takes our Toyota Prius (HYBRIDS PWN ZOMFG) to get gas. He returns. No big deal.

Today, my mom takes the Prius to work. All is well.

Then at about 7:30 AM local time, my mom calls and talks to my dad. My dad comes into my room and explains what happens.

Basically, my mom was on I-88 and the hood flew up while she was in the middle lane. Somehow, she managed to keep control of the car and pull over to the shoulder.

I asked what happened, and my dad admitted to being the cause of the problem. In the Prius, the fuel door latch release is next to the hood release on the floor next to the driver seat. My dad forgot which latch opened which one, so he flipped both of them.

I told my dad that the fuel release has a picture of a little gas dispenser and the hood release has a picture of a car with the hood opening.

He said he wasn't about to bend down to see which was which.

I asked him, since he pulled both, why he didn't shut the hood so it wouldn't fly up. He said he thought because it didn't fly up when he was driving that it wasn't really open.

So needless to say, today almost SUCKED big time.

My dad is banned from getting gas.

You should give your dad 40 lashes. Make him think twice about leaving the hood open!

heheh

he would break it...

my dad we be a great guy for a company to test products on...

if there's a way for a piece of technology to break, he will find it

consumer reports should hire him... it would be a new rating in their magazines... how long until stroke victim breaks it... ("stroke victim" is how my dad often refers to himself... don't ask...)

What a weird look at this day Sava. This should be one of the top happiest years in the year. Your mom could have died, or even should have, since it was super dangerous and totally a flip of coin what happens.

But she didn't! And everyone is OK!

SO why the sour faces? THis is happy day!

Old people clearly shouldn't be allowed to drive. Lets set a maximum voting age at 60.

hehe, good to see you coming around Sava. On another note, from your same link:

18 - 29
Bush 45% Kerry 54%

Clearly only people under 30 should be allowed to vote. Lets lower the voting age, and set a voting age maximum.

well I'm wary about lowering the voting age because then Paris Hilton or Britney Spears would win... and then my head would just explode.

I think people should be tested each year, written and driving. That'll keep 'em on their toes and lead to better driving.
