Firefox 1.5 beta 1 is out! Enter the AD-FREE zone

Brief summary of changes:
quote:

* Automated update to streamline product upgrades. Notification of an update is more prominent, and updates to Firefox may now be half a megabyte or smaller. Updating extensions has also improved.
* Faster browser navigation with improvements to back and forward button performance.
* Drag and drop reordering for browser tabs.
* Improvements to popup blocking.
* Clear Private Data feature provides an easy way to quickly remove personal data through a menu item or keyboard shortcut.
* Answers.com is added to the search engine list.
* Improvements to product usability including descriptive error pages, redesigned options menu, RSS discovery, and "Safe Mode" experience.
* Better accessibility support including DHTML accessibility.
* Report a broken Web site wizard to report Web sites that are not working in Firefox.
* Better support for Mac OS X (10.2 and greater) including profile migration from Safari and Mac Internet Explorer.
* New support for Web Standards including SVG, CSS 2 and CSS 3, and JavaScript 1.6.
* Many security enhancements.

There's basically lots of little changes that didn't make the tiny list...like how there are now error pages instead of a popup error, and it comes complete with a button to try again (which means if an error page pops up when making a post, clicking the button to try again will submit the post in full).

More detail: Notable bug fixes/changes from Firefox 1.0 to 1.5 Alpha 1: http://www.squarefree.com/burninged...ases/1.5a1.html

Notable bug fixes/changes from 1.5 Alpha 1 to 1.5 Alpha 2: http://www.squarefree.com/burninged...ases/1.5a2.html

Notable bug fixes/changes from 1.5 Alpha 2 to 1.5 Beta 1: http://www.squarefree.com/burninged...ases/1.5b1.html

The rendering engine in Firefox 1.5 is actually a full 2 years of active development newer than Firefox 1.0's.

Does anyone else have problems with Firefox crashing on some websites?

I've noticed it just doesn't like some.

like Comedy Central, Gamespot, G4TV... there's more, can't remember... but a lot of popular sites don't like it... and some sites hyperlinks don't work!

Have any of these issues been resolved?

Got it, but I can see Q^3 complaint about Firefox. All my extensions are now outdated . I have to wait for updates.

The vast majority of them will likely work, but their max_version is set to 1.0.

There's an extension out there which lets you load them anyway.

Put an end to popups!

Nice
Using it now. The tab drag'n'drop is nice.

I also notice that "Creative Commons" has been added to the search engine list, I didn't know about that site previously, interesting.

edit: More first impressions. Color of selected text changed, seems more effective for darker backgrounds. The "Try Again" thing is nice.

Just installed and opened it. Haven't tested any new features, but so far I'm trying to figure out if it's worth switching from Camino.

Camino's becoming a dead end.

Google just hired Camino's primary programmer, Mike Pinkerton, to work on Firefox (presumably to help integrate/localize it more with the Mac).

It also will instantly mark links as visited, even if you hold CTRL to open them in a background tab. That's one thing I really like.

It's a tool users of the "nightly" builds have used for a while.

When that extension is installed, it adds an item to the right-click/context menu of the extension manager called "Make compatible".

It basically forces extensions not flagged as working with 1.4 to work with them, and most good ones will. Use at your own risk.

Install Greasemonkey (http://greasemonkey.mozdev.org/) and then write a script to modify posts from MarkG.

I'm very tempted to make one which replaces Mark's flag with a Macedonian flag.

It can disable ads in Google.

Google has the best ads of any site. Those ads support the most useful site on the web. Removing them undercuts the entire thing and eventually could make extensions like this useless, because it doesn't exist.

Suffering from ads?

The branch is the bunch of code that is intended for release.

The trunk is the code that will eventually make up Firefox 2.0. So lots of experimental support is being checked in there that won't be in 1.5 (including native vector/Cairo support, and a totally new graphics/interface engine).
