It does here. It's all a question of how long a course, and how big is the difference in the general society reaction ( between assimilated and non-assimilated ) If people will accept the immigrants fully after the course, and the course will be extensive enough, it will work.

In Israel, the youngsters have the army for that.

Don't know but we don't have croatian gangs or serbian gangs. But we do have albanian gangs.

yeah, we do, I'm not pulling your leg . They don't form like a serious threat or anything, but we do have albanian wannabe gangsters at least in Helsinki for years now. They were seen as one of the more violent than most other youth gangs, but it wasn't like shooting and stuff anyway. I don't know, maybe they have progressed to that level now or not.

I know that there are lots of people from the Balkans in Sweden, because Sweden took in lots of refugees, asylum seekers and workers in the past decades. But Finland let in, like, ten. So it must be that of those two were Albanians and they have multiplied and now their three kids terrorize Helsinki.

Hey, I know there's like handful of Albanians in Finland. But they've formed a gang form very early on. I'm not kidding here. Don't blame me for the fact, but it is one.

But as of now, they're sadly losing the ethnic gang idiocy competitions to other ethnicity, but because I'm afraid of racism accusations, I won't say what it is. And it doesn't even make any relevancy to this so it doesn't matter. OH YEAH and the domestic ones of course are the biggest group always.

ANYWAY, yes, we have them, and few problem cases, yeah sure, but not to any huge extent like in Sweden or so.

NAAAAH Russians are pretty mellow in here. Somalians are picking up the pace though.. Of course they are a big group in here, amongst other ethnicities, however they've specialized in idiocy (the stupid ones in youth), and actually a special unit was just set up like last week, just to solve their crimes and hopefully beat them down with batons, in Helsinki alone.

I don't approve. I think that there should be an effort to integrate immigrants more. Those who are problematic and commit crime should get a chance to work in the police force (ofcourse, when they reform and promise to behave), others should get educational opportunity and so on.

The effect the army, sports and so on are supposed to have is overrated. Look at us in ex-Yugoslavia. Half of century of serving in a joint army which came out of joint struggle against the nazis and did that mould us into one political entity? No. The policy was, by the way, to do exactly that. People were usually assigned as far from home as possible, units were mixed, individualism, localpatriotism and so on were violently discouraged.

VetLegion, I agree that every effort should be made to help the immigrants and most of all rhe refugees to integrate better. I like the police idea. And of course, to either catch up or to do what other peers are doing so ,, without that they only have each other to rely on and that's when you get gangs as a result, and natives, and tensions.

You've missed my point. Army is not a strong force of cultural integration or assimilation. It can't make Finns out of non Finns, Yugoslavians out of Croats nor Israelis from Arabs.

Right, but it sure helps the minorities to understand and 'get in to the groove'. They are not asked to become us. They are asked to integrate. That's different. With ingeration it mea ns that you can and should still hold high and aprpeciate where you come from. Do that thing. But also, when it comes to working inside this new society, you should work your way there like the society.. well works. And not expect the society to change.

THat's the difference. To understand, learn and to be able to move within this new system and people, while of course keeping your own precious and priceless cultural things and what not alive with you and your family and friends and maybe even let some of the natives in too, who have taste for exotic things.
