I remember seeing the planes crash on the afternoon news, thought it was to bizarre to even be a bad action movie. Horrible. RIP.

What were we all doing when we first heard?


I was a second-year med student, and we had just finished our first AM lecture. On my way to the infectious disease labs, I passed a small knot of our professors standing in a hallway looking at their pagers. By the time we were sitting in lab, a number of my labmates had gotten calls on their cell phone, and a few rumors were flying around. Our prof told us what he had read on his pager, that an airliner had hit one of the WTC towers. Then, his pager showed the news of the second airliner, and class effectively ended.

Someone had set up a small TV in the computer lab, and myself and my two housemates watched in horror. We decided to head home; during the 15-minute drive back to the condo, the towers came down. When we got home, my ex-fiancee was lying on the couch, still in her pajamas, transfixed. Apparently her mom had called at about 8:50 and said, "We're under attack," and hung up. I think I watched CNN for about the next 20 hours straight, and finally broke down in tears when British Parliament started session by singing the Star-Spangled Banner.

I was getting out of the shower whne tuber told me about it. We spent the next hour as i got ready for work watching the news. I was leaving the house when the towers collapsed. Funny when i got to work no elective surgries were cancelled. I do remeber the o.r. director calling the reservists into her office to have a talk.

I was in Psychology class (after Gym which was outside so we hadn't heard about the first plane yet.) The topic, ironically enough, was the inherent violence in mankind. After class, I walked out of the room, so MLeonard in the hall, and we just looked at each other like "WTF?"

I just got home from school as a friend of mine sent me a msg saying two planes hits the WTC and told me to watch the news. At first it just seemed too unreal to be true, it wasn't until the towers collapsed I realised that this was for real

I was walking back from class, and heard my TAC officers talking, so I went back to my barracks and got my platoon leader to let be watch his TV (only seniors had TVs). I actually left and went to another class, and when I got back the towers started to fall.

I spent the rest of the day with one of my freshmen whose father worked in the towers. Had to wait for 72 hours before he got the word his dad was okay.

I was holding some Pre-Concrete Placement Meetings with a large Military Contractor aboard Camp Lejeune Marine Corps Base, the worlds Largest Amphibious Training Base.

We had to do some teleconferencing and I needed some product availability schedules and of course the cell phone system was crazy.

Rumors of planes headed up the Potomac river (after the Pentagon Crash)

It hurt that we were attacked..


I have a movie, recorded by Two French Film makers

If you get a chance it is very touching

It is not a Micheal Moore type of hype or slander but a film recorded during the attacks

Must've turned on the TV about 5 mins after the first plane it - I was transfixed in horror for the rest of the day...

I remember visiting New York a few months later, although I went past the site I only saw the wall by the church with all the pics etc of the victims - I didn't go to the viewing point they set up or take pics as I felt like I'd be some sort of voyeuristic tourist...

serious question: in the third pic Winston posted, it says "Heroes of September 11th"... just curious... that's a lot of names. Is that all the victims? If so, how does being a victim of a terror attack make one a hero?

I hope that another skyscraper is rebuilded in it's place. Something taller... just to symbolize that terrorism will not work.

you have a valid point for the term "HERO" gets thrown around...

Most probably someone figured since they died as victims they were post-humously decreed a hero when in fact they were victims.

A few could certainly fall under the heading "Hero" but for all?....

I dont want to lessen the memory of these folks but Hero most certainly wouldnt fit all

Yeah, not my intention to diss any of them. I just don't like to see the term "hero" being thrown around like that (if that is the case here). I see to count a lot of names in the pic... it looks like about 3,000. The firefighters and police and stuff are definitely heroes, but not the other people.

Not to disparage them. It's just that when the people use the word hero and call regular people heroes (by regular, I mean people who did nothing heroic but were just victims of the attacks) it lowers the value of the meaning of the word and IMO, devalues the heroism of real heroes.

But still, everyone who died there deserves to be memorialized...
