Official: Build City 2 8-9 of Apolyton? Suffering from ads?

The settler is upon us.

The plans we have been relying on call for a city close by Apolyton and the wheat in the North to build a granery and then workers.

The purpose of the worker pump is to supply the labour to improve new cities and then top up population for key cities to make them and their barracks more effective.

Several sites have been mentioned for this worker pump city. 8-9-9, 8-8-8 (my proposed site) and 8-9.

8-9 is where Krill wants the city, and I agree. I gamed it out and 8-9 is easier to get running as it loses shields to waste later than 8-8-8. Also, and more importantly to me, 8-9 can easily get to 10 shields per turn (and Poly as well) in case of a national military emergency.

What say you? Do you endorse the plan to build the second city at 8-9 of Apolyton?

Poll times out in 72 hours.

I didn't vote yet... Need to understand a little more

The 8-8-8 option gives us a coast, and our neighbors are seafaring.

Ok, PBEM for Dummies: Do we have some interest in this area? I mean, keep some kind of naval power…?

I tend to agree. Specially the coastal one. I mean, why not?

Sorry if this was already discussed.

8-8-9
or
8-8-9-9 (so that one tundra tile becomes a 3 food producer)

The reason for this is that I don't think the Cap should ever share the game tile

It isn't as great of a site as I'd hoped it would be.

It would take longer to get set up, and would not have the same ease to get to 10spt in the case that we are surprised and need every unit that we can pound out.

wouldn't a place 4 spots away be too much space waste? not to mention corruption from being farther away from the Cap.

I trust the judgement of krill, nye and others who had done the simulation to confirm that 8-9 will benefit us in the game. Voted approved.

From the intelligence/statistical view point, this is not good. 1. Being so close to Poly, there will be a lot of overlapping and our land area will probably stay last (place). Which means we won't even know for sure whether other teams founded new cities. 2. overlapped cities means less tiles and this will have an impact on average scores. There are still teams out there who select conquest targets based on average scores.

but it means the other teams will not know what happens with us - they will know we have a settler but they did not drop in land area.

I was in the process of drafting a thread, but oh well.

These are the main points of the argument for 8-9

  1. We get IW sooner than any other position, because of the free upkeep that the city gives.

  2. we lose less shields, and less gold, to corruption than a city at 888,

  3. 89 can be used as a 4 turn settler pump, in conjuction with Apolyton, but 888 cannot,

  4. Enkidus can quickly and easily be moved from Apolyton to 89, for both hapiness and defence purposes, but we would have to waste time building a road to 888 in order to do this,

  5. 89 can be abandonned later in the game to make space for more cities, so we are not stuck with it for the whole game. 888, on the other hand, still has to be demolished to make space for better position cities, and has none of the above advantages.

---

Also, the advantage of being coastal is that you can build curraghs to explore with, right? Well, if we built those, we would fall very far behind on the Granary build, so 888, and 889 and all of those coastal cities in fact, which are ineffiecent worker pumps to begin with, become even worse, as it takes even longer to build the granary.

The advatage of 89 is that we don't have to keep that city for the entire game. When we need more land up there, we can disband that city, providing more land for cites. The same can be done for 888, if you want more efficient cities, though.

---

Oh, and for the coastal cities, 8877 (using whale), and 88899 (using wheat) are my favourite for position for caostal cities, but only 8877 can be halfway decent in the early game

Aro, coastal cities are great, you get to use all of the great commerce producing coastal and sea tiles.

But you need to build a 60 shield harbour first.

You can build curraghs and galleys, so you can explore the coast of the continent,

but that takes it away from being a worker pump, and it can't even be a settler pump, unlike 89.

The Possibility of a second Settler pump can't be stated enough as to how it can help us.

I've been looking at some of the CDZ spoilers and they often use more than one settler pump, sometimes even 3. Then they build massive numbers of MW's. Of course, they also mainly play with Accellerated Production, which can be hard when converting back to normal production (at least on a conceptual level).

But none the less, feel that we will defiantely need the capability to pump out a few other settlers, when we need them. War Settlers come to mind for one use. Also, if we take over some or all of CBR aarea, we will need to fill it up as fast as possible.

Excellent city location.

I disagree with the idea of that city being temporary though. Why wouldn't we keep it?

A second settler pump is great. Definitely go for 8-9. It's not like we have to keep it past the point of growing to city sizes.
