OK, Simple poll, what to research next.
Basicly, the list is as follows:
- Masonry
- The Wheel
- Warrior Code
- Ceremonial Burial
- Writing
Remove alphabet and insert writing, as we should be getting Alpha from CBR. Also, assume we don't get an SGL...
Advantage of Masonry: one the path to SoZ, can build walls (needed to defend properly). Costs 120 beakers.
The Wheel: Can see horses, on the path to Horsemen, costs 120 beakers
Warrior Code: Can build archers. Free bombard can comein handy, and we might need them if we get attacked very soon, and don't have any resources to hook up. Cost 90 Beakers, cheap.
Ceremonial Burial: Uh, on the way to Monarchy, but we could trade for it off CBR. 54 beakers.
Writting: On the path to (suicide) galleys, rep, and, most importantly of all, Literature.
One Note, however:
CBR could already be researching it, as they started with alphabet, and if they are researching, they will definatly beat us to it. Costs 240 beakers now, 216 if CBR research it before us, 192 if the other civ and CBR get writting before we do.

So, let the debate begin

Yeah, I do think that the best bet lies in the choice between WC, Wheel, and Masonry. I would probably discount masonry though, because it is only useful if we really have ago at SoZ, get an SGL, or get invaded and need walls.
The choice between WC and Wheel is quite interesting though. WC is good, as you say, because it helps is in the short term with archers, and Apolyton can do an Archer>Worker>Worker cycle every 4 turns, so we can certain make use of it.
Knowing where the horses are though could certainly come in useful though. If we sent the 2nd settler to get iron, we could probably send something like the 5th to get us horses if we did not fo WC. If we do research WC first though, we would be delayed settling horses until around turn 50-60. Rough estimate, but we can't be certain, there are too many variables.
Also, the advantages of researching, and settling horses sooner, is that it gives us more time for building chariots for upgrade, and this is important because this is the only upgrade that we can do, and we can only do it once. Everyother civ can simple disconnect iron, max their tax, and then upgrade some more warriors to swords later on. We can only build swords from scratch. So the more chariots we upgrade means we have to build less horsemen, so we can put more shields into building swords, enks and cats, if and when we get to maths...

I voted wheel as well (first vote! Woot!). I'm a sucker for resource knowledge, so finding our horses is quite important, especially on this human balanced map! :sarcasticsmilie:
But seriously, horse knowledge will aid us in future planning.

As for what they are researching, Only thing that It could be, given the time and beakers that they have stowed away, without any new techs is.... Writing
Tehy are going for the Free tech with Philosophy.
What this means, it means two things.
First, they haven't been able to conclude a tech trade with CDZ. Why is that?? Have they had problems already that they can't conclude a tech deal with them, even though they have known them for just about as long as us (if not longer). But also, both start with the same techs, so nothing to trade as of yet. Good thing that we have that no retrade clause.
And Could CDZ and CBR be racing for the same thing, possible. If so, that puts us in a unique position to get may other techs and trade them to both.
And the other thing is, if CDZ is going for other techs, they are waiting for BR to get Writing to trade them. Because I doubt that CDZ hasn't already researched the Wheel, or maybe are currently working on it, after doing Warrior Code. Then they will do HBR next.
We definately need a mobile force.

We never really discounted the fact that they could have researched CB first, instead of popping it from a hut.
If they did this, then they could easily be beelining for Monarchy right now, and we would have no way of knowing (well, we would have one way, but it would take a while to know for certain). Or they could have researched CB, and then went on to Wheel or Masonry, and we would not know, as their commerce will have taken some hits from building settlers without a granary, and low base pop.

I was thinking of seeing if we could trade the wheel with CDZ, but I truly do believe that they already have it or almost do. Their UU demands the wheel, as it shows them horses. If for some reason they aren't going for the wheel, I don't want us to be known as the team who armed CDZ.
