What Should We Research Next? Support Apolyton, buy Call to Power 2

OK, Simple poll, what to research next.

Basicly, the list is as follows:

  1. Masonry
  2. The Wheel
  3. Warrior Code
  4. Ceremonial Burial
  5. Writing

Remove alphabet and insert writing, as we should be getting Alpha from CBR. Also, assume we don't get an SGL...

Advantage of Masonry: one the path to SoZ, can build walls (needed to defend properly). Costs 120 beakers.

The Wheel: Can see horses, on the path to Horsemen, costs 120 beakers

Warrior Code: Can build archers. Free bombard can comein handy, and we might need them if we get attacked very soon, and don't have any resources to hook up. Cost 90 Beakers, cheap.

Ceremonial Burial: Uh, on the way to Monarchy, but we could trade for it off CBR. 54 beakers.

Writting: On the path to (suicide) galleys, rep, and, most importantly of all, Literature.

One Note, however:

CBR could already be researching it, as they started with alphabet, and if they are researching, they will definatly beat us to it. Costs 240 beakers now, 216 if CBR research it before us, 192 if the other civ and CBR get writting before we do.

---

So, let the debate begin

Writing isn't such a great bet in my view because, as you say, CBR may already be researching it. Not having started with Alphabet, and researching an expensive tech like IW off the bat, I don't think we can win the race to Philosophy.

CB we should be able to acquire through trade, as you say.

Either The Wheel or Warrior Code would be good militarily. Warrior Code satisfies immediate defensive interests, The Wheel lets us see where our resource interests lie in the longer run.

Masonry might be another good bet. Unless PAL is on our continent (and the chances of that are looking slimmer if CDZ really is nearby), Masonry is just waiting for someone to pick it up and research it on this continent.

So, three good options as I see it...

Yeah, I do think that the best bet lies in the choice between WC, Wheel, and Masonry. I would probably discount masonry though, because it is only useful if we really have ago at SoZ, get an SGL, or get invaded and need walls.

The choice between WC and Wheel is quite interesting though. WC is good, as you say, because it helps is in the short term with archers, and Apolyton can do an Archer>Worker>Worker cycle every 4 turns, so we can certain make use of it.

Knowing where the horses are though could certainly come in useful though. If we sent the 2nd settler to get iron, we could probably send something like the 5th to get us horses if we did not fo WC. If we do research WC first though, we would be delayed settling horses until around turn 50-60. Rough estimate, but we can't be certain, there are too many variables.

Also, the advantages of researching, and settling horses sooner, is that it gives us more time for building chariots for upgrade, and this is important because this is the only upgrade that we can do, and we can only do it once. Everyother civ can simple disconnect iron, max their tax, and then upgrade some more warriors to swords later on. We can only build swords from scratch. So the more chariots we upgrade means we have to build less horsemen, so we can put more shields into building swords, enks and cats, if and when we get to maths...

I would like to see if we can ask CBR what they are researching. We make a deal with them that we let them know what we are researching and then they tell us what they are researching. Including the next goal after the current. Basically, what Im saying, is that we should approach CBR with a proposal to cooperate on research so that niether of us duplicate the other so as to prevent the "other" Continent from getting ahead of ours.

I voted wheel as well (first vote! Woot!). I'm a sucker for resource knowledge, so finding our horses is quite important, especially on this human balanced map! :sarcasticsmilie:

But seriously, horse knowledge will aid us in future planning.

Very interesting proposal, but I would like to know a little more what they know about CFZ, before we engage ourselves so deeply with CBR.

Talking about our neighbors, our relationship is moving sooooo fast to the next level…
Should we live together?

As for what they are researching, Only thing that It could be, given the time and beakers that they have stowed away, without any new techs is.... Writing

Tehy are going for the Free tech with Philosophy.

What this means, it means two things.

First, they haven't been able to conclude a tech trade with CDZ. Why is that?? Have they had problems already that they can't conclude a tech deal with them, even though they have known them for just about as long as us (if not longer). But also, both start with the same techs, so nothing to trade as of yet. Good thing that we have that no retrade clause.

And Could CDZ and CBR be racing for the same thing, possible. If so, that puts us in a unique position to get may other techs and trade them to both.

And the other thing is, if CDZ is going for other techs, they are waiting for BR to get Writing to trade them. Because I doubt that CDZ hasn't already researched the Wheel, or maybe are currently working on it, after doing Warrior Code. Then they will do HBR next.

We definately need a mobile force.

We never really discounted the fact that they could have researched CB first, instead of popping it from a hut.

If they did this, then they could easily be beelining for Monarchy right now, and we would have no way of knowing (well, we would have one way, but it would take a while to know for certain). Or they could have researched CB, and then went on to Wheel or Masonry, and we would not know, as their commerce will have taken some hits from building settlers without a granary, and low base pop.

writing is not the only tech they might be researching. I guess they are not saving their money but they might've been researching Mysticism and are now researching Poly to get to monarchy asap....
but I also think writing is more likely...

I think we should research "the wheel" (reasons already stated by several persons above)

And when we have the wheel we can perhaps trade it with either CBR or CDZ or even both

I was thinking of seeing if we could trade the wheel with CDZ, but I truly do believe that they already have it or almost do. Their UU demands the wheel, as it shows them horses. If for some reason they aren't going for the wheel, I don't want us to be known as the team who armed CDZ.

I would like to build SoZ... So, Masonry could be the way. I don't see so much use in walls... Do you?
But I didn't voted yet. Still confused...

In fact, I tend to pick whatever the computer presents me to research...

For me, it came down to Wheel or Masonry. Though I am a Masonry slut (can't stop building them!), we'd be better off knowing where the horses are to plan for the inevitable rush of mounted units that kicks soo much ass; be them chariots, horsemen, knights or (god forbid) Cavalry.
I build the Pyramids so that I don't have to bother with graineries and build queues. I've always been too busy conquering the world to bother with them, thus the Pyramids are great. However, that's never been a problem here.
So in summation: The sooner those citizens of the other teams are released from their oppresive rulers, the better.

Voted Masonary.

We should be meeting CDZ very shortly. It's likely that CDZ does not have BW, we can trade BW for CDZ's Wheel. If CDZ does not trade, then prepare for War. My guess is CDZ would be researching Wheel first.
